savage 12

I just purchased a savage 12 LFP 22-250,the cheapo). I got it because it had the fastest twist rate I could find under $800 and left handed. I am not overly impressed with the rifle yet since the ejector spring is so weak that it will often fail to kick the empty out of the chamber. This I can live with because I have read that this is common for varmint rifles so the empties doen't fly accross the bench. And I know that the fix is simply to put a ejector spring in it from a model 111 or something like that.

I have also had it fail to extract a case all the way back before the case slipped out of the extractor's grip causing a jam. It seems that there is more room than necessary around the case when I put a case in the bolt. My other rifles have hugged the base of the cartidge much more closely than this one does.
Any thoughts?
I bought a Savage because they are supposed to be easy to work on and change barrels--- I just didn't realize I'd have to work on it so much!!!

try imr4895 34.5 gr. 52hpbtmatch sierra cci br primers play with seating length, mine likes 20 thou. jump. if it don't shoot a barrel swap is easier to do than anything out there. good luck cliffe

What color is the extractor? If it's a copper color, that's the old style that has had issues just like you describe. If that's the case, call Savage, have serial number handy) and they'll send you the new style.

Should solve your problems!

Thanks for the replies guys. The extractor is Black and I was giving the gun a good scrubbing last night and accidentally took off the extractor. It is too simple - a spring pushing a ball on a larger diameter hole in the bottom of the extractor. I oiled the heck out of if after I got it back togeter and shot 20 rounds today with no problems. I also got it to shoot a .5" group,4rds) and a .75" group, also 4rds) at 100. Now I'm getting somewere. it seems to like 52 g Amax and the 55 Blitzking. Doesn't like 60 g vmax or the 55 g Nosler!!

britz,

In the past, I've had to use Tubbs 'Final Finish',available from Midway USA) to smooth out a Savage barrel where the lands looked more like a hoof rasp than something a bullet was intended to travel over. The guns typically shoot well, but what can I say, the barrels are... well factory barrels. The Final Finish will most likely move your throat a bit; not too bad on the one I did but it was measurable.

Something else to keep in mind... it may be worth it to get a couple extra ejector springs... they seem to be weak and need replaced periodically,or if you pound them w/ hot loads).

Wish I had a better answer for you... I have a 10FP that has been a miserable POS in terms of ejection since the day I got it - and I've done tried *all* the fixes I could find, some of them get pretty imaginative). If the blasted thing didn't shoot so well I would have got rid of it long ago ;) I do have a new bolt w/ a PPC extractor from SSS sitting on the bench... thats the latest thing to try; just haven't had time with some other higher priority work on my plate.

Adding to what billmo stated...some of these take up to 250 to settle in and start grouping. I almost gave up on my 223, but I am glad that I did not.

Hey, thanks alot for the replies guys. I went to the range today and it is shooting OK, shot 6- 5 shot groups and all were under 1.25 inch at 100 and a couple under .75 with the best 4 shots at under a half. I haven't given up yet.

I have about 190 - 200 rounds through it so far and I did a break in, but I sure wasn't impressed with the bore! I could see marks in the muzzle and I think the crown leves something to be desired! THey don't taper the crown at all, just a total 90 degree stop at the muzzle. I know it doesn't like Nosler bt 55's or Vmax 60's for sure!!

Well, if it don't come around for you man send it back and let them go over it or put a barrel on it. It is suppose to shoot. Bill
