Savage 12 Palma rifle

Hank,

no direct experience of this combination, but there's absolutely no reason why not, either from a rules, chamber match or external ballistics standpoint. As Bryan loads it for Palma / Fullbore shooters, he wouldn't sell much if it didn't work! The 155.5gn Fullbore is a pretty jump tolerant number and suits a range of barrel throats. I believe Savage chambers this rifle with one of the popular 'Palma / Fullbore' reamer designs but can't remember which. Monte Milanuk and Darrel Buell of Team Savage were using handloads with this bullet on their recent visit to Scotland out to 1,233yd range with considerable success in Savage factory F/TR rifles.

We did some load development in a Savage Palma today for one of our junior shooters (he just got the rifle today) and we tested the 155.5s. They shot right with the Berger 155BTs and we shot the same exact load 45.6grs Varget with the 155.5s, 155BT, Sierra 2156s and Nosler 155BT. All testing at 300 yards, from a rest, scoped. All 4 bullets with same powder charge were all 2950-2980 fps, regardless of bullet, no pressure signs with any. So I dont think you would have any problems shooting Bryan's ammo as I doubt his factory load would be stouter than anything we tested today.

As an aside, for elevation, the Berger bullets held the best elevation, with several 5 shot groups going well under an inch in vertical. The Noslers were real close behind and the 2156s, well, it didnt like them very well. Thankfully this rifle liked the Noslers cause thats what our club issues the juniors now and he will be running those for 600 yards and in, for LR, it will be the Bergers as the elevation advantage should show itself more back there and the bc is better. But the price difference is dramatic. :-(

Oh, and for a factory palma rifle, I was pretty darn impressed with what it could do. Especially when compared to the cost of a built Palma rifle, the Savage is a steal.

Has anyone tried the 155 Hornady A-Max Palma loads in their Savage Palma rifle? I picked up a nice used Savage Palma rifle this last summer but haven't been able to try it out yet. Hoping to get the reloading stuff set up this Fall to have some fun. In the meantime maybe pick up a couple boxes of Hornady and a few other brands to have some fun and set basic parameters.
