Anyone know if a savage 12 palma rifle would work in fopen? Setup would be minix with Dr. Flat top rear bag? Asking out of curiosity. Thanks.

that is the best action sav makes imho, if you have one use it put a good barrel on it, Kreiger or Brux and shoot some X's you may want to put a Grimstod bolt lift kit in, but I have one also, have a 6xc brux barrel on it and it shoots very well at 100 yds and 500 yds it has shot some .1 groups and 2.0 at 500 and a 1.2 at 500, but I'm shaky and my eyesight is not the best so those days vary, but it will print .3's very often pretty easy

A criterion barrel will work also had several and they have all shot well, better than a stock savage barrel anyday, but go shoot and learn and get ready to spend money, if you want to be in the mix

Appreciate the input. So, if I run the rifle on a minix and dr. Rear bag would I have any issues with tracking?

The Savage 12 palma rifle is a great rifle however the drawback to it for F-open is that it doesn't have a flat fore-end and the caliber/twist rate is less than optimal.
I see a lot of guys try to shoot F open with factory rifles off a rest. The problem a lot of them have is that without a 3 in. flat bag rider attached up front the gun tends to cant and/or torque in the rest. This is a big disadvantage especially if the shooter is not aware of it. If you are going to use a Savage 12 in F-Open attach a 3in. wide bag rider up front or forget the rest and shoot it with an F-class bipod (like a F/Tr rifle). Also make sure you have an anti cant level.
As far as the caliber/twist rate the Savage Palma has a 1-13 twist rate. This is made for the 155 gn. 30 cal bullets they use for PALMA competition. You can shoot it for fun but if you really want to be competitive in F-Open you will want to shoot a heavier bullet. My suggestion would be to order a Shillen savage prefit barrel from Northland Shooter Supply. I would order a 30 in. barrel chambered in 284 Win with a 1-8 twist (large shank for the palma action).
Again the Savage palma is a great rifle the stock, action and trigger are all good its just that it wasn't made with F-open in mind.

If you haven't already bought the rifle, I would recommend the Model 12 F Class. It has a straight bottom on the butt stock and a wide flat forend. It is offered in 6mmBR and 6.5x 284, so you could put on any barrel that uses the .473" case head size.

I can add a little to this. If you go with the 6.5x284, get a 284 bushing die and bushings for the 6.5. Then when the factory barrel is toast, you can easily rebarrel to 284.

to expand on what pete said above, 3 inch bag riders are available to slide right into the accessory rail on the savage palma. I sometimes shoot my savage ftr that way in open and it seems to work quite well.
