savage 12 f-class 6br

have a Savage 12 f class, been playing with it now for several months. Best group a 300 yds right at 1.3 in, cant seem to get it any better. Chamber is very deep throated, dont have a lot of bullet contact when close to lands. Have a local smith with a match reamer,no turn neck,I measured his rifle with a oal guage, lot better than what I have now. He will set my barrel back and ream very reasonable. If I have this done, will I pick up some accuracy ? Any suggestions out there? Help! Neil

What have you tried in terms of powder/bullets/primer? I honest doubt you will gain a whole lot with a fresh chamber. My bigger question is: 'Are you using wind flags to get those groups at 300 yds?'. If not, start there.

luck, tiny

Tiny- Tried Varget and RL15,Amax is best so far, 107 Sierra not so good, 105 Berger just ok. I dont think my loads are the problem. Rifle is inconsistant, I have it in my mind that she is so deeeeep throated that it will not shoot as it should. I am open to suggestions. Neil

I have the same deep throat gun. You and I corresponded a little a few weeks ago. I just tried a load using the Berger 108BT that looks very promising. Like 1/4 inch in consecutive groups without playing any with seating depth at 100 yards. These were only 3 shot groups, but it was 4 groups in a row, the only 108's I loaded. I set the load up for 105 VLD's and loaded up the 108's at the same depth just for the heck of it. Glad I did. The 105 VLDs were 1/2 inch at best. The load is with RL15,30.3) and Wolf small rifle mag primers. The ogive measurement was 1.858. I plan to tweak that, and do a ladder to verify the 30.3 and play with the depth a little. This is with old brass I play with for loads and not fresh brass. Promising.

Did you try seating the 105 VLDs well *off* the lands - like what Berger recommends on their website?/

I have one of the 6.5-284 models - and it similarly came with a throat that would make Roy Weatherby proud. Seating B140VLDs to the lands was becoming a losing proposition as I was running out of bullet in the case - and accuracy was kind of 'eh'. Ended up seating them back as much as 120 thou, read the tech article on their site, you'll see what I mean) and the groups tightened up considerably.

Good luck,

Monte

Monte, this is what i did with the 105 VLD's jumping the 40, 80, and 120. The 105's were just so so at those depths, but the 108's show a lot of promise now. he emailed me, and his throat is forever. He might chime in here, and maybe there is still hope for him in jumping? i can't imagine how it is such a wide spec. for their freebore? I wish him luck.

Knew I had a very deep throat 4 months ago, dont know why I am still screwing with it, HOPE I guess. Going to have barrel set back next 2 weeks, hope it works, cant hurt. Aint happy with what I got now! Try something! NEIL G
