SAVAGE 12 AND 10 MISFIRE PROBLEMS

Has anyone experienced misfires in the Savage 12 and 10 models accutriggers. Pull the trigger but round does not go off. If you open the bolt and rechamber by sliding bolt forward harder the round goes off. Almost like the firing is not going full travel, its does not leave a mark on primer after the misfires. Hope to hear some input. thanks Joe

Joe: Both my Savages ( a mdl.10 and a 12BVSS) with Accutriggers started to have problems at around (approx) 1500 rds. Carefully closing the bolt (not slamming), and the firing pin would follow the bolt forward. Had one unintentional discharge. They were professionally worked on for temporary "fixes", then same problems all over. Changed them both out with Rifle Basix and never looked back.

have seen several of these rifles in my shop with the accu-trigger not being adjusted properly . the problem with these rifles the minute you would touch the wire on the trigger shoe it would disengage and the gun had to be recocked . i do not know if that is what is happening to yours hope this is of some use to you . T.R.

I have had no problems with my accutriggered FP10 along with a bit over 4k rounds through it so far.

These problems usually arise out of the triggers being adjusted on the light side. They work fine for a while then wear in a bit and become increasingly 'sensitive', then misfire every other shot. Leave / adjust the PT / LRPV etc version at / to the factory 12 ounce setting and they seem to remain reliable. I have an LRPV with over 1,500 rounds through it and never had a problem with the trigger left as it came from the factory (12 oz).

I did have this problem though with my single-shot 12 action F/TR rifle where the builder had reset the pull weight to 8 oz or maybe less. I readjusted it to a relatively heavy 1lb and it has performed flawlessly over 1,000 rounds or so since. Savage says the Target AccuTrigger can be set to 6oz - and it can, but not with any long term reliability IMO.

We have seen this "Click no bang" problem with two 6BR Savage F-Class rifles right out of the box, with triggers set at factory at about 1.0 lb. Fix was to go to standard Savage Accu-trigger, set at about 1.5 lbs., not the light version that came with the F-Class gun. Factory did the swap for free. The fire control system on Savages is the weak link. More serious Savage guys I know end up tossing the Accutrigger. Even if it functions 100%, it takes a while to adjust to the trigger insert, and I've seen good shooters have trouble moving back/forth from an Accutrigger to a CG-Extreme, because the insert requires different trigger modulation.

Quite so - some people never adjust to it! It almost ruined my day when I tried my Savage 12 action based F/TR rifle in a 1,000yd bench rest match too. I tried to shoot my first group too fast for the AccuTrigger, result several misfires, loss of rhythm and 14 point something inch group. The Savage 12 F Class in 6.5-284 is very popular in UK 600yd and 1,000yd BR 'Factory Sporter' class, but its users all report on the need for a smooth, deliberate trigger finger action.

We can get Rifle Basix triggers here in the UK and some people have fitted them, but being a poor man I'll stick with the factory assembly as long as it keeps working for me. Stuart Anselm (Osprey Rifles, the UK's sole Savage precision rifle specialist) has built several very successful model 12 based F/TR rifles and I think the factory trigger remains the norm but will ask him the next time we meet up.

all of my target actions ( 3 ) will not function properly on the lighest trigger setting. you can't close the bolt soft enough to preclude the trigger lock..at 8oz to 10oz on a lyman trigger gage they all function properly.also you have to pull the trigger straight back, or the trigger will lock.that sounds like a no brainner, but no..i find myself torqueing the trigger to the left ( left hand shooter). when 2 of them right out of the box exhibited this problem, you wonder how these rifles were tested at the factory & how good is Savages qualitity control

Both my Accutriggers were set at 1 1/4#, so with mine, it was not an issue of "too light". I've been really impressed with the RifleBasix, set at 1# but so clean it feels like less.

I see this often. When a Savage bolt/firing pin gets out of timing and adjustment it is a nightmare. This can be cured by making the necessary adjustments. When I time and true a Savage (one thing) I put a shouldered cap in the back of the cocking piece. Second, I also install a cone point set screw in the main screws that allows for external adjustment of the firing pin tension. Third, Many Savage bolt/cocking piece pins are not adjusted corectly and the bolt is over cocking. Fourth, Savage accutriggers need to be broken in and this takes about 1500 firings.
