Savage 110 Elite Precision Questions

I have a Savage 110 elite in 6.5 Creedmoor. It shoot decent but nothing like my 6 Dasher. I am thinking about getting a prefit barrel and changing to a 284 Winchester or something in the 6mm range.

Mid range and long range is what I am wanting to start getting some experience in but I also want to not be on the last page of the matches.

My question is, is the factory action and setup with this rifle worth using or should I sell it and start from scratch?

The rifle feels great and runs great but I want to take it to the next level, so to speak but I am worried I will be wasting money on something that would never right great no matter how much money I throw at it.

Thank you for the help.

Comparing a 6.5CM to a 6 Dasher at 600 yards is akin to lining a Ford Mustang next to a Dodge Demon in a heads up quarter mile race. No contest. It truly depends what discipline you want to get into. If F open class, I suggest a 6 Dasher for 600 yards, and if you want a 1000 yard F open gun, consider .284Win or 7RSAUM.

Well I am wanting to get into F Class but my question is, will that savage action trigger be enough to get started?

I currently have a 6 Dasher that shoots AMAZINGLY well and I love it.

So I guess I would be going to the 284 Win. Is it worth do the work to this rifle or should I sell it as it is and build something new.

I took a used Savage 12 F/V, 6.5 CM and used it to get into 600 yd shooting. I did my ladder testing to find out what load combo the barrel liked, I ended up shooting 6" groups at 600 yds.

Then I restocked it, bedded it, pillered it and now I can get sub 4" groups at 600.

Now that was 5 years ago and now I'm on my 3rd barrel. With my Brux barrel I can get sub 3" groups at 600 and sub 6" at 1000 yds.

I then took a Savage 308 and rechambered it in 6mm Creedmoor. Did the same modifications that I did on the 6.5 and it will also give me great groups at 600 and 1000.

The Accutrigger is ok, but I replaced both with a timney trigger and set at 1lb.

I can shoot with the best of the guys at 600 and 1000 and have a lot less money invested than the other light gun guys. I'm not out trying to win against 6BR guys but I can come close to some of them.

Like mentioned before trying to compare a 6.5 CM to 6BR, 6 Dasher is no contest, in fact I am thinking of finding a old ratted out Savage .308 or .243 and making a 6BR. The reason I like Savage actions is I can swap out a barrel, set the head space in about 30 mins using only a barrel nut wrench and a home made barrel vise.

You didn't mention what kind of accuracy your looking for at 600yds.

I am wanting to try and build something that can get into the .375 to .500 MOA groups out of the 284 Win.

Does not seem impossible but I am trying to figure out what I can really get out of the rifle.

Is your goal to “shoot with the guys” or compete and win? If it’s the latter you need more than a smooth running action. You need lots of practice and excellent reloading skills. A build on a custom action will help you on the way if you are willing to do the rest of steps. Rifle precision starts with the action - it’s the foundation. I think your first step is to determine the level of your commitment.

When my 300WM Elite Precision barrel wears out shooting ELR, I will re-barrel to 284, 7SAUM or 7PRC. I think the MDT chassis and Accutrigger are great. 1/4 MOA at a mile rig.

I was debating about the 284 win or the 7PRC.

I have committed to this sport. I have been a national champion in BladeSport and know what committing to a sport really is.

I have been reloading for 10+ years now and have a great skill set there. I have also been a mechanical engineer for 20 years.

Practice is something that just opened up because we now have a range about 10 miles from my business.

I am very excited to try to move to this level and see what I can do. I have never been afraid of the work. I am just trying to find a good starting point.
