Savage 110 Apex Predator

I'm in the search for a hunting rifle for my son that can also be a great platform to improve upon.

I'm currently looking at a Savage 110 Apex Predator (SKU 57360). This checks a few boxes for me: 24" or 26" barrel, 6.5 CM, threaded muzzle.

However, I have a few questions I hope this community can help me with.
1) Can this action be used for Savage pre-fit barrels?
2) Is the same action used for LA and SA applications?
3) Are replacement bolts or bolt faces available to change cartridge types?
4) Is there a different platform in the same price point that would better fit the bill?

Thank you all in advance for your input.

I don't own a Savage, but from the factory literature and posts I've read here's my take.
Savage Prefits - Yes
Long action and Short action are different
Replacement bolt/bolt head - yes, just change the bolt head for standard or magnum and magazine within the same class, long or short.
Savage Axis is the same, identical except the stock and no accutrigger and 22" barrel in Creedmoor- on sale for $399 or LESS some places.
Savage 110 Apex is $599 or LESS some places

I'm sure others that own Savage rifles will give you more detailed and possibly more accurate information if I have misled anyone.

Yes on the barrel as long as you get the large shank barrels (I believe).
Savage calls all their actions 110 now but there are still long and short actions and they are different, (action screw spacing and overall length etc..)
Yes you can purchase bolts for your Savage and this is one of the deference’s between the 110 and Axis actions (the bolts are not interchangeable).
Axis rifles are less expensive and they are getting some aftermarket support but I still prefer the 110 based Savage action.

The 110 should be a small shank, long action.
If i recall correctly the rifles chambered in the Winchester Short Magnums (model 16s i believe) and some of their target actions are the large shank.
The bolt heads are changeable, but again i believe they are different between long & short action.

The Axis only comes in a long action. The trigger guard & magazine are changed to swith to shorter cartridges.

Savage 110 in 6.5CM is a short action.
1. Yes
2. No Except in Axis
3. Yes
4. Up to you really
While the 6.5CM is a short action cartridge, the 110 should be a long action receiver.

Savage has done a long action 110 in 223 Rem. I have one.
Why anyone would do it?
I have no clue.

Nope. Savage did a nomenclature "adjustment" months ago and everything became three digit no matter whether LA or SA...they have backtracked lately.

Go over to Savage Shooters forum.
Go to the “110 Series Rifle” section and look for FAQ. You should find the lots of info like how to tell if you have a large shank or small shank barrel (I believe Savage went to large shank action for all their rifles back around the year 2000). Either way you should find answers there.

SO not true you should delete from your answer.
Only large shanks are target actions, LRPV, and some magnums.

yes you can rebarrel and then a jard trigger, life will be savage, I just installed a jard 7 to 12 oz had to fit and file some but it works great, now some new eyes

1. yes
2. no
3. yes
4. Yes, I think so. The 110 apex pred has the savage proprietary mags instead of aics and doesn't come with the aluminum bedding block in the stock. The 110 tactical and desert tactical come with their accustock that has an aics magwell in it for nearly the same price. The regular tactical has a fluted barrel, the desert version does not. Only difference besides stock color.

If you want a sneaky super secret savage platform the 110 scout (and haymaker but only comes in 450 bush) in 308 has an accustock with better rubberized grips on it and its 110 action has more metal left on top than the other short action 110s. It has the same form as the 12lrp (savage's best short action repeater which I also have). This action is much stiffer than other 110s and should support heavier barrels and higher recoil without flexing. Not sure how big the barrel channel is on their stocks so you may have to shave some plastic if you want a big barrel in there. But that's true of any model you would consider.

My advice with most savage rifles is to immediately sell the factory barrel and buy a hand lapped stress relieved aftermarket barrel. With few exceptions (12 lrp) this will drastically improve the performance of the rifle and if you sell the factory barrel it will only cost 100-200 bucks more for a criterion or shillen.

Cabelas has a nice sale goin on right now too. Good luck and have fun.

The 223 in a long action let's you put whatever length load you choose to shoot. My best 223 load is with 80 bergers, but have to load them shorter than I would like to because of magazine length.
No problem w/ a long action.

Bound to get it wrong eventually!
As far as editing my post as you suggested then your post would just confuse readers later…. so I guess I’ll leave it as is. No shame is making a mistake.

Freebore would definitely be important.
