Savage 10 police series

Just bought a savage 10 police series in 223 with digital stock and wow am i pleased and impressed with it. I have a scope on order, A 6500 bushnell in the 2.5 x 16 mill dot. I would like to know what would be or who makes a nice rail to put on top to mount scope. Also, down the road a may put a custom barrel on it and do a couple of things. Is it best to get one already done at shilens or buy a blank and have it done with out the barrel nut. I think i read in hear it can be done that way if you chose to. Is one way better than another i guess is what the question is. Also can these actions be trued up similar to what they do to the remingtons? If this gun shoots anything like i think it will i am going to get a predator h1 with the accu stock in 243. First savage i have had and can't wait to get to the range. Any help would be greatly appreciated about these rifles. Thanks....Dan

If you want a top end base the Badger, or Ken ferrell are the way to go. For a more economical base the EGW makes a good base for the Savage rifles. Also the Burris extreme tactical rings are great rings. I don't think you can beat the extreme rings for the money. The Burris signature Zee rings are also great rings.

If you want to go to a custom barrel, Shilen are great barrels from what I have seen and heard. With that said don't over look Pacnor barrels. They are great barrels!! Pacnor offer's prefit barrels for Savage as well. The Pacnor barrel is all my Smith will shoot, and They are definitely a force to be recognized with.

It will depend on what kind of tolerances you want in a chamber as far as going with a prefit barrel or a barrel blank. With a prefit barrel you are limitied to what reamers the barrel maker has in their shop. Don't get me wrong they are usually good spec's. With a blank you will have the option of buying your own reamer to your choice of spec's as to what your chamber dimensions will be.

Yes Savage actions can be tured just like a Rem. Fred, at SSS is highly recommended to true a Savage action. Also take a look at this guy. http://www.tiptopwebsite.com/websites/index2.php?username=ssgcustomrifles

If you are going to use this rifle for a switch barrel gun. I would use the barrel nut. You don't have to get a prefit barrel to use the barrel nut. I was told that it is just easier to switch barrel's and setting the headspace with using the barrel nut. Maybe it's faster I don't know? Many custom actions and Rem actions are used as switch barrels so I assume that it isn't that hard either way, but understood from what I was told basicly it is easier and faster for a Amatuer, Witch is exactly what I am when it comes to switching out barrels. Someone else would probably do a better job of explaining that one for you.
Good luck and enjoy!

I ordered my 10 police carbine in .204 from Savage. I used the DNZ one piece to mount my Sightron SIII 6 x 24 and recommend it highly.

Can't wait to burn out my bbl so I can install a shilen, though mine shoots 1/2 moa easily enough.

Go to Sharp Shooter Supply ( http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ )and look at the scope bases and all the other neat things there for Savages. I have the Ferrel bases on my guns and I think they are TOO HIGH. I would go with the Bench Source base - it was not available when I got my bases. You might also want to go to Stocky's Stocks ( http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/the-110/Bell-Carlson-tactical-700/Detail ) and look at the Bell & Carlson Medalist Tactical stock - I have this on the below 223 10FP and it was a quantum jump better than the Tupperware stock mine came with. Just as a FYI, I skim bedded it also.

Do not be in a hurry to change barrels. My Savage 10FP 223 is a real shooter and I would never change the barrels on it as long as it continues to shoot as well as it does. My guns all seem to like 24.5 grains of H4895 and a Sierra 69 grain MatchKing seated .020" back off the rifling. This may be too long to fill the magazine, but I shoot mine single load. This load in my gun routinely wins the local 200 and 300 yard F-Class matches.
