Saturn Barrels- Benchrest Quality?

I've never used a Saturn barrel and never seen or heard of any being used in Benchrest, FClass, etc matches. They are cut rifled. Anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks

Steve Satern is a big high power supporter. He primarily specializes in service rifle and prone rifle barrels. I can say that his SR barrels are by the most accurate I've used. When the Krieger on my Palma rifle goes out, it will get replaced with a Satern. Call Them and chat with Deb or Steve. They'll get you taken care of.

(Dusty) Do you have any personal experience with Satern barrels? If not, you should not be posting about them. In regard to your claim "they are not benchrest barrels" what do you base your opinion on?

Sling, you have received feedback from a Distinguished Rifleman/ President's 100 member who has written 164 posts since joining 2009. You have also received feedback from a guy who has posted over 4000 times in the two years he has been on this forum. Not all opinions are equal, not all are informed.

For what it's worth, here is a 600yd target from one of Steve's barrels. This was a 1:8 that I shot for 2 seasons. Great barrel, won its share of matches.

This was with an A2 service rifle. 80gr Sierra over 24.3 of Varget.

I have used Satern barrels on service rifles and bolt guns and they have all been fantastic. I know of others (better shooters than me) that have also had great results with Satern barrels.

Sling,

FYI, you just got feedback from a second Distinguished Rifleman as well as prior national champion at Perry.

Yes i have plenty of experience with them. Ive done quite a fewfrom back when proof used em and just in general. They make a fine high power barrel i will agree. Ive never seen one at a br match and have seen some bought for that reason.

Considering that a barrel maker doesn't know the specific intent of use for a barrel when they are doing the internal operations to make it, it seems that they have merely one option: to make the very best barrel that they can. Considering also that cut rifle barrels all share the same lineage, Boots Obermeyer being the master teacher, the standard for quality is quite uniform among the makers. One wouldn't have to look too far back to find Benchrest equipment lists completely filled with buttoned barrels, Shilen, Hart etc. with not a Krieger to be found among them. That is certainly not the case anymore.

Now, what are we to make of this? Are we to assume that Krieger finally got its act together a few years back when Tony Boyer finally tried one? I think not! No, Tony found out what the High Power community had known for decades, Krieger barrels are great barrels as are Obermeyers, Brux, Satern, Bartlein etc. Any High Power shooter who has shot the spindle out of the spotter at 600 yds (this is surprisingly common) can attest to the accuracy of his or her barrel, albeit from a sling with irons and no scope and no bench.

Someone send me their email to post a pic for me... i have a satern barrel and it shoots very well. Ive ran it through the hoops... its like a pacnor barrel, maybe a little better. Mines a custom 24 inch bull in 6.5 Grendel.

Its not a BR barrel. But ive shot one hole groups with it before, not every time though...

So IMHO, the answer to the OP's question is -TBD. Benchrest quality to me, means a product that has performed well in the Benchrest arena- which to me is it's history in Registered Benchrest Competition. So far, these threads have not produced any such evidence. If Saturn barrels want to be known as BR quality, then it would behoove the maker to get some in the hands of world class competitors to make it happen.

Not everyone tailors their product to the same market. Lots of great barrels that don't show up in the list from the Super Shoot. Lilja, TruFlite, Obermeyer and others don't happen to be in the Shortline game. (Boots obviously has done so in the past). Doesn't mean their barrels aren't capable, just means they focus their production capacity elsewhere.
