sako vixen 6ppc single shot

Hello and thanks in advance for your opinions. It's been a while since I have visited this forum but I have my sights on a rifle y'all might know.

My family is sorting a complex estate from my father in law. Getting down to the last items and this one I think I will just buy. It appears to be a once in a lifetime rifle. I need to pay my mother in law what it is worth but can't really find anything comparable in cyberspace to compare to. It is 95% or better. Beavertail fore arm, single shot action, heavy barrel, import marked by Stoegers, 6PPC USA, nice walnut stock, red recoil pad which looks original, very little wear, no rust or major blemishes. She will be grateful for whatever I offer but I have no interest in a low ball, I just want a fair market price. Any ideas?

Sorry, no pics, the guns in ohio but I have inspected carefully and if there are other things you need to know for a valuation I probably can recall or make a call. I'll post pics when I get it which will probably be by Xmas.

Thanks a lot, Pete

I've sold 2 in the last couple of years, both going in the 1100-1200 neighborhood. One was on a GB no reserve auction, the other here. Good deal on that rifle is 1000, full retail probably 1200, if it has the box numbered to it add another 50-100.

Pete: Over the years I bought 2, used Sako L46 Vixens, one in 222 Rem & the other in 222 Remington Magnum, both with the original Bofors steel barrels.

At the times I did not have my Hawkeye borescope, so bought them sight unseen as it related to the condition of the bores.

When I did have the opportunity to inspect the bores, I found them both to be heavily pitted from the front of the chamber all the way to the muzzle. Copper fouling was extreme and accuracy was mediocre, at best. Both had to be re-barreled.

Several friends have also bought used, older Sako's and they too had (or still have) heavily pitted bores.

Just something to check before purchasing. I know how you feel about "lowballing" the price on an estate sale rifle, but the same holds true for the purchaser: don't want to pay an over inflated price either.

Give her 600 bucks and you should all be happy.

I have a Forester (L597 or is it L579) in 243 and I wouldnt part w/ it. Bought it new in 1967 for about 225-it is the delux model-high polish, nice stock.

And, another problem I had with the 222 Remington Magnum: When gently closing the bolt, the rifle would fire. Took it to my gunsmith & he checked the sear for hardness. it was as soft as lead, had never been properly case hardened, and the cocking surfaces became rounded off from normal use. He was able to recut the surfaces and case harden the critical parts.

These older Vixen's (L46's) have an open trigger design, like a Springfield, Mauser, etc., and there are no after-market replacement triggers being made to fit them. The L461's are replaceable with after-market.

Nice, basically well-made rifles, but like most things, not perfect.

First of all, that particular model is a highly desireable one. I have one in .223 with the bull barrel, externally adjustable trigger and imported by Stoeger. They offered that model in .17 Rem., 22 PPC, 6 PPC, .223. I paid $700.00 for mine ten years ago and it shoots almost as well as my custom rifles. A fair price for that model would ranfge from $750.00 to $1100.00 depending on bore condition. The L461 action is a very nice action by itself. I would grab that in a heartbeat.

I own SAKO's, mine are repeaters. SAKO was the first and maybe only 6PPC offered as a standard rifle from the factory. The interesting part is the 6 PPC was a wildcat from the USA for benchrest shooting. If you buy the rifle you will find the 6 PPC a very nice cartridge to shoot.
