Sako TRG 42 Stock failure

I have a 2007 Sako TRG 42 in .338 Lapua. It has light use, under 400 Range rounds. I noticed two hairline cracks where the Buttstock attaches to the receiver. Berreta of course wants me to spend $600 to replace it. I see this as a manufacturing defect! Why would anyone pay to have one defective part replaced for another possibly defective part??

With that said. Does anyone know of, or recommend a material that I can use to meld this together?
Are there any other after market rifle stocks, other than the Saber MOD -1 (Pricey) for the TRG 42 Setup??

regards,

Malcolm

Your rifle is 8 years old. I wouldn't expect Beretta to give you a new stock.

Good news is that you can easily fix it by following these steps:
Use a reversible C-clamp to lightly open up the cracks.
Use compressed air to blow any dust out of the crack.
Fill the cracks with clear 2-part epoxy using a throw away syringe.
Reverse the C-clamp and tighten to close up the cracks.
Wipe the excess epoxy off that will flow out and let dry. You may have to lightly sand any excess epoxy that runs after it dries.

My friends TRG 42 too broke the stocks the same as your , with less than 200 rounds and one year from purchasing.

The stock on my Sako TRG 42 also broke. It cracked at the pistol grip. I ordered one of the XLR Chassis systems for mine and couldn't be happier. The guys at Accurate Ordnance installed it for me.

I've got a TRG and put a KRG folding stock on it. Never even used the original butt or cheek piece. If anyone needs one, I am willing to part with it at much less than Beretta. PM me if interested.

The TRG42 has a very poor bedding system, IMO. It has no "recoil lug", like a Rem. 700 or an integral one like Mauser. It has a very small, maybe 6MM, projection that protrudes from the stock under the front ring that fits into a milled slot on the under side of the front ring. The projection is not very tall, maybe 1/8". The action screws have to be very tight to keep these "engaged" so that NO movement is possible. Any movement of the barreled action in the stock will end up breaking the stock. Some engineer thought about this way too long, and then Sako adopted it. The "tried & true" wasn't good enough, I guess. Some have removed the barrel and fitted a barrel bracket/recoil lug like Rem. uses. Just keep those action screws tight.

As already noted KRG makes a folding buttstock for the TRG. If you try the repair and it is not satisfactory the KRG folder has an excellent reputation and is less than one third the cost of a Sako folding buttstock. http://www.kineticresearchgroup.com/index.php/products/trg-2242-folding-stock

Shortgrass, thanks for the tip. I am aware of TRGs occasionally having this failure but have never seen a solution offered.

As several have pointed out - take look at the KRG folder - it just plain works, the only "downside " is you have to open it to remove the bolt , if that's a downside at all.

I would use JB Weld if you could thin it with acetone and get it in the cracks. It would be expensive but maybe Mcmillan could make you a decent stock.

I agree, they owe you nothing.

I have to agree with this to an extent. I have an '06 338 and have not had any issues after over 800 rounds. This was also before Barreta took over importation and warranty. The issue is, the proof that this was not the result of mishandling. I'm not saying it was but that would be Barreta's argument. Unless there was a performance defect, a recall would not be issued. As far as repairing yourself, I would not recommend expanding the split any further. Remove the buttstock, put any thin tape on the backside as a barrier and install it again. This will probably set the expansion back open again. Use an industrial adhesive and work it into the fissure. Wipe the exterior with alcohol to remove the surface adhesive. When cured, take the barrier tape off. I just believe if you glue the fissure and then compress it again you may just be setting up for another slit. While you have the buttstock off, take look inside and see if you can relieve any material that may be causing this issue. I would definitely agree with the KRG replacement but me personally, I would find any resolve that did not cost extra money.

I have have an older Sako TRG 41, originally chambered in 300 Win Mag and now as a 338 Edge. It is also a pre-Beretta. I would try to fix/self repair first myself. Also as stated above, try and diagnose how the stock fits to ensure everything is mating up perfectly. The only issue I have run into with my rifle is that the fore-end will loosen some and slide forward about 1/8" to 3/16" creating a small gap between it and the butt stock, more than likely due to mounting my bipod on the rail that is inletted into the bottom of the fore-end. Other than that, no issues in 20 + years.

If you end up repairing it (as above, spread the cracks, inject glue), go get a small bottle of G-Flex.

Very, very good epoxy, and most importantly it stays (slightly) flexible. Most epoxies harden very rigid, so if there is any movement of the substrates they stop adhering. Plastic, especially under recoil, flexes.

Let it cure for a few days. A week is better. It is not 5 minute epoxy, and that is a good thing.

Wondering if you were using a lead sled. Many people who own those big boomers do. That is a good way to break a stock.
