Sako TRG 42 A1

Purchased a TRG 42 A1 today in 300 Win Mag. What are reasonable accuracy expectations with handloads for the TRG? I am new to magnum rifles and to the TRG’s. Rifle is down the list for load work. Just curious how they shoot if anyone here has any experience with them. Thanks!

Probably better then you. :) teasing. From my experience what sets the trg 22 and 42 apart from other rifles is that they seem to shoot just about everything good. Where as most other rifles will shoot good with one specific load. My last trip to the range with my 338 testing handloads I shot this 3 shot at 300 yards off a bold and bag. Best of luck.

Slightly different but I have a Sako TRG 21 .308. These rifles are more accurate than they ought to be. If I can do my part it will often put them in a ragged single hole at 100. Whats most impressive to me is almost any decent load you feed it it will shoot great. I usually shoot the nothing fancy 168gr. Hornady HPBT Match. On the Dillon I use AA2460 and single stage I use Varget. Same great results. Wish my .338 Lapua was a TRG. Going to do something about that one of these days.:)

I bought a couple of closeout A7 Roughtech rifles in 270 win. One for a friend and one for my son. Was able to get the first one to put 130 ttsx’s into .25”. This sold me on Sako’s and caused me question custom rifles. The TRG is a whole new experiment for me. I have never loaded for anything more potent than a 30-06. The trigger on the TRG is very interesting based on a couple of dry fires with no adjustment. The safety in front of the trigger is super cool.

It should shoot very well, I have an older TRG-41 in 300 Win Mag. With the 1-11" twist it hammered with 175 grain class bullets. Now to has wears a Bartlien barrel chambered in 338 Edge. It is a hard platform to beat in a factory rifle.

This rifle has a 27” barrel with 1-11” twist. I have also thought that it can be easily rebarreled to anything I want in the future.

These rifles put the question out there of whether hammer forging indeed produces the longest lasting, most accurate barrels of any production method.

Maybe you can’t hammer forge an overly thick barrel, but these guns sit at the absolute top of their niche.

Yes, a friend of mine re-barreled mine. I wanted to go with the 338 Lapua, but would have needed to purchase another bolt. So I went with the 338 Edge, and feel it is as good or better, with 300 gr. Bergers my cartridge overall length exceeds my magazine. Just no off the shelf ammo. I could always screw my 300 Win Mag barrel back on for needed. When we removed the original barrel, it was super tight.

What is best source of 300wm Brass? Do not see any made by Lapua or Peterson. Rifle is 1-11” twist. Will that stabilize 200+ gr bullets? Thanks

Peterson made 300winmag brass, but not often.

But from the brass that's usually available I'd rate them in the following...

1. Norma
2. Nosler
3. Federal
3. Hornady (equal quality to federal in my opinion)
4. Winchester
5. Remington (but I wouldn't used them at all due to common off center flash holes breaking de-capping pins)

Beware. The case capacities vary from different makes.

Norma and Nosler have the most generous capacity (95 gr H20)
Winchester (93.5 gr)
Hornady (93 gr)
Remington (92.5)
Federal (92 gr)

Most smiths when rebarreling a TRG/TRGS action cut off the taper on the front of the action and add a Remington style recoil lug. See if Google can come up with a picture. GAP did a bunch of them back when I did mine as were others.

I can’t say what ga precision has done in the past but this is my trg-22 in 6 creedmoor chambered by them. It shoots as good as you would hope. This was 5 shots at 1000 off a bipod and bag.

I have no experience with a chassis gun or a heavy, long range target rifle. I think that I may do some load work and then take the TRG to a weekend long range school.

Strong plan. Just throwing this out there...I get the best results in my 300wm's using H1000 and 215M primers and Winchester brass. Some of my brass are at 8 reloads now. Bullets will be subjectively influenced by the barrel twist.

Difference between Sako TRGs and ordinary Sako rifles is that barrels are handpicked, Just little bit tighter bore than ordinary. Also bolt action is hand fitted and adjusted at factory. So if you purchase TRG you will always get the best.
