Sako TRG-22 in 308 ?

I live in new york state,how unfortunate !
Do you intend only to shoot paper if so the recoil is not that bad coming from a guy with 2 bad shoulders. The scope depends what you have budgeted,if it were me I would look into the leupold 8-25,you will have the power if you need it and if you shoot closer,dial it back.If it is only paper for sure get the leupold 40 power benchrest scope or something like it.The trg's are plenty accurate,use premium ammo like federal gold medal match or good handloads with all the best prep you can do to take out factors that will make you more accurate yet.Ammo is expensive these days and harder to come by,black hills,hsm ammo isnt bad.If you are recoil sensitive then get the sako factory brake or have it threaded and start looking at different brakes out there.

I have been shooting woodchucks for three seasons now with a 223. I thought I would stay that route and move up to a 6BR for longer range shots as my 223 is a 1/14 twist. As it turns out this year I gained access to a really nice 600 yard range that has a league and also runs competitions. This is why I have shifted course and I am now considering the TRG. As you mention I can't see the recoil as too much of an issue, I am also a recoil sensitive shooter. I am asking around my area and I am hoping I can find one to shoot.
One of the reasons I would like to give the TRG a try is the ability to just use factory ammo for the first few months or even the season. I do handload but it takes me time to get up to speed when I change rifles. As you mention, I have read the Federal 175gr Match is a stand out factory load for this rifle.
I also hear I can possibly borrow a scope for a few months so I will keep an eye out for a 40 power.

Here's what I did. I like the feel of the TRG ergos, but didn't have that much luck with the accuracy. Took a Stolle action and a TRG stock set, had a machinist make a backbone to fit the two together using AICS mags. Legitimate benchrest accuracy with the look and feel of a TRG. Don't get me wrong, the Sako shot good, I just expected more.
Shooting 7mm-08 out of an 8 twist 18" barrel I'm getting .1"-low .2"s @100 and .3"-high .4"s at 200. Holds MOA as far as I've shot it. The factory TRG was more like 5/8" groups with load development.

Steve - I have a bone stock Sako TRG 22 in 308 and it's a tack driver - it has the factory muzzle brake and I have a Nightforce 5.5x22 NXS on it mounted in Badger rings. I shoot 168 Berger hybrids using IMR 8208 powder - I participated in a 500 yard factory shoot this summer and shot a 2.70 inch 5 shot group at 500 yards. It has very low recoil and a fantastic trigger - at 100 yards it's a consistent 1/2" or better gun - I highly recommend the Sako.
My gun isn't a TR-22 its a TRGS in 338 lapua and I have a set of optilok mounts didn't use , but I believe the rail made by Richard Near is the way to go. Its picatinny on top and cut to fit Sako dovetails on the bottom. Richard told me to apply marine tex to the bottom of the rail and slide it into place let it set for 24 hours and add rings and scope. The 338 lap mag hasn't moved it in many rounds. Call Richard he used to answer all calls personally, but I am sure someone will answer that knows the products. if you want to use optiloks Email me ill sell you mine worth the money.
I'm running a 20moa picatinny rail that came with the action and a GG@G quick detach mount. I have seen bone stock TRG's shoot very well so don't let my experience talk you out of it. However, mine was a picky one so I got out of it.Steve3 said:

I was shooting 100-500m, on two occasion 1000m (such opportunities are rare in our part of the world). Started with 168SMK bullets, but eventually switched to 185 Scenars as they proved to be very accurate for 100-300m. Sold the gun for several reasons, but the main one was that the matches here are something of a Fclass look-a-like and I was being hard pressed with guys shooting heavy Fclassers with 50g triggers. On the other hand, I was thinking of replacing the barrel with .260Rem for tactical matches but there are maybe one or two per year in entire Europe, so I did not bother. But on the other hand, these are very good guns with good resale value and I could sell mine relatively easy. I would definitely try to get a .260Rem from the start.

I was doing a lot of reading yesterday and the 260 is indeed a favorite cartridge of many who have started with the 308. Favored for both better ballistics and lower recoil. It would be nice to see the TRG new in a box with a Sako 260 barrel. Frankly I would like to shoot one of these before dropping 3K. I can always rebarrel it but then 3K turns into close to 4.

I shoot a TRG in 308, and have been for close to 3 years now. My scope is a 3-32 Nightforce, mount is a 20 MOA Badger, rings are 30mm badger medium, I use a factory muzzle brake (on occasion), and have the factory bipod, which is not the best, but worth the $$ if you have it. Aside from that I have 4 spare mags.
As for rebarreling them, they come with a 1 in 11 CHF barrel, so don't expect to shoot it out anywhere under 6K rounds.
