Sako s491 6ppc usa scope mounts and rings

I have a s491 that I would like to mount a 30mm scope. The mounts and rings on the rifle are original. I have
taken it to a gunsmith????? who said he could not find anything that would work. The current set up is 1 inch.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have your gunsmith, get a Picatinny rail section and drill and tap it to your action. Then use what ever rings and scope you want!

That's an easy one. Go with Tally bases and rings. Nice set up.

Burris makes a 2 piece set of bases that tap onto the actions ring dovetails and then mount 30mm Burris Signature Zee rings with the plastic inserts . Great set up.

Thanks so much Fred V. Just what I am looking for. Well Done.
And yes a picture would have helped,,,,,, just did not think.

There’s lots of options out there. I wouldn’t drill and tap that action, you’ll diminish the look and value of the rifle. I would call Talley first of all or use Leupold, I have both on several Sako’s. You can also go to the Beretta website and get 30mm OptiLock rings in 30mm, I think they only have low in stock currently. I’m sure there’s more options too. Here’s a link to the Beretta sight. I’ll add a couple others too.

One other thought, you can always call AccuFlite rifles, they are a huge Sako dealer and can tell you quickly what your options are. Here’s the link.

tnx nakneker.
Good info. I fell better about ordering something or at least having someone
to call. I seem to order too many wrong items for one reason or another and
dislike sending order back because of my ignorance.
thanks to all for the help

I've mounted scopes on many Sakos over the years, and much prefer the Weaver bases. They are solid, strong, reasonably priced, and easy to install, although there is a bit of a knack to it. You would need nos. 66 & 67. Here's a set on eBay:

Also, a pic of one of mine

Sako optiloc rings and bases. 3-12x56 meopta meostar in low rings will JUST clear a no3 profile barrel.

May not be the cheapest but is a very tidy way to mount a scope on a classy gun.

very neat

Talk to this guy if the other options don't meet your expectations.

I know I'm late here but I've mounted optics to several such Sakos and I've learned a few things.

Hopefully you haven't had anyone drill/tap that fine older receiver. Completely unnecessary and destructive.

If you can find an older Redfield SDT base set, those go directly on the tapered dovetails and they accept any Leupold turn-in style rings you prefer. In my case, that's Burris Signature. If this option is interesting I may have an extra set of these in my stash.

Sako Optilock bases and rings have a problem - for some reason, new bases on older rifles have always resulted in the scope aiming several *feet* to the left at 100y. Older Sako bases apparently don't do this. It's insane to me that this is possible but I can confirm this using multiple sets of new Sako Optilocks on multiple Sako rifles, and I can also confirm that Beretta is clueless.
