Sako Rifle's

Hi..I'm looking to buy a quality/accurate factory rifle. There is a lot to choose from out there and it seems most people are drawin to Savage/Tikka/Sako. My question, is Sako the better buy and why. They own Tikka and where is the differance in quality an accuracy.

is Sako the better buy and why

No, Sako is their higher end brand, the differences are just in fit and finish. Tikka makes a perfectly good rifle, getting that 2-3% better finish costs a lot of money though. I don't know for sure of course, but my guess woudld be no statistically significant difference in accuracy straight out of the box.

Disclaimer - I don't own a Tikka, but I do own a Sako

Sako's are the premium (expensive) product. Tikka is the "cost saved" product. Think of it as a Cadillac vs. Chevrolet, or Lexus vs. Toyota (I expect I'll suffer abuse for those two analogies).

They differ in how their actions, bolts, etc. are built. The Tikka uses cheaper materials where they can (eg - plastic vs steel), cheaper manufacturing techniques (2 lug 2 piece bolt, vs 3 lug 1 piece), less variety (one action size vs. many) and a lower degree of finish to provide a cost savings.

AFAIK, they share barrels, and triggers. Both can be very accurate. I own 2 Sakos, and wouldn't mind owning a Tikka.

I think that the bottom line is how much $ you want to spend, Sako has a really well deserved reputation for being an extremely accurate factory rifle. If I was looking at something that I might re-barrel though, I'd look at Savage for the ease of doing that. I had a 25-06 Sako that my older son now has and it is one of the few rifles that really doesn't care if you feed it 85gr bullets or 120 gr, still amazingly accurate for a factory rifle.

I have actions from most makers. They are all good, but I have found that you get what you pay for. I have built several rifles on older Sako actions and had them all checked for being true before installing a new barrel. Not one of them needed to be worked on. Can't say that about the others. They come with a good trigger, recoil lug, and have a nice base for bedding. Asking if it will out shoot , well there are too many variables. Pure factory out of the box, YES. Shot two in 1000yd for a while before I could afford a custom action. Won a couple of matches. I think Sako is a better action. But that is my opinion. you have to form your own. :)

Go handle a few of each and it will become clear the Sako is a much higher quality rifle. I would not say it is a better buy though cause they are expensive. If you have the money I'm sure you would select the Sako.

As for accuracy, either brand has a chance of being the most accurate. All three are noted for out of box accuracy.

I puchased a Tikka T3 Lite in 243 recently and have been very pleased with the handling and accuracy for a sporter weight rifle.

My groups are averaging under 1/2 inch at 100 yards with reloads. I had to remove a factory designed pressure point in the stock and seat the bullet deeper than I'm accustom to for a 243 to acheive the best accuracy.

Maybe I just lucked out getting a good rifle but I'm very pleased with mine to the point that I'm considering a 22 250.

Dear Shaner72

Maybe this will convince you regarding a factory Sako rifle. I have a factory Sako 75 in 270Win. Still original barrel. Factory trigger was set down a bit but still extremely crisp for a factory trigger. (I am convinced this trigger is better than the Timney I have on a Mauser action 243 of mine). The attached pic is of a 3 shot group at 200 meters. 140g Nosler Accubonds in Norma cases, CCI primers. This group was witnessed when I shot it. Obviously, this is my hunting load.
I do not owe a Tikka for comparison but apparently they are good rifles too. Buy a Sako and cry once or buy both and cry a lot once.

Cheers and enjoy.

I have a Sako AII and a Tikka M595 - the discontinued White Tail Hunter. The AII was not as precise as the Tikka, untill I figured-out its trigger mechanism. Once I tuned the trigger, I was able to make it as accurate as any of my target rifles. My only regret of owning Sakos is that I let go of a Sako AIII in 30-06 about 20 years ago. I'm still sorry about doing that. Both riles are mechanically excellent. You pay extra for the Sako's wood and finish.

I have a Sako 270 that I purchased through the mail with paper route money for I think $160 + $1.60 in postage from Herters. I love that gun. It is well made, beautifly crafted, and shoots great.

That said, I have two Savages, one in 308 F/TR and 223 LRPV. The Savage is just so versitle and easy to work on it is hard to beat. Many competion shooters shoot the Savages actions and they told me "add a custom barrel someday and you have a custom rifle". I did have the bolt face trued and added a Rifle Basix trigger, but neither were essential.

But I might add they are not as pretty as the Sako.
