Sako M995 problems

I have a relatives M995 Sako in 7.82 Warbird I am looking at for him as he has magazine issues. The aft part of the magazine will dislodge at wrong times all by itself. It appears to only be held in by spring psi.
I need to talk with someone about this issue, anyone out there who can help. I googled alot and find no info..

I have the exact same rifle in shop right now in 7.82 Warbird with the same problem. I've found a couple people that eopxied the magazine in permantely and used it as adl configuration. Kind of defeats the purpose of the detachable box though. I hope someone has a fix for this. If I come up with something I'll be sure to let yo know.

The only 995 that I've looked at carefully has a flat spring imbedded in the stock (or held in place by the middle screw?), and the back wall of the magazine has a very slight lip bent backward to sort of capture the back of the magazine on the end of the spring. It is not bent enough to be a positive latch-in. It just holds the back of the mag with some friction. The front latch is small and none to reassuring either. Pretty cheesy. You might try bending the lip at the top edge of the back magazine wall out incrementally, keeping it 1/16" wide, or a little less. It should latch in more positively each time you increase the angle, but by 90 degrees may not be removable any more. The rifle I examined is not mine and I can't experiment on it.

Hmmm this is interesting to me although ive never had one in 7.82 Warbird ive had alot of them and never experienced this problem. I wonder if its a 7.82 problem? just curious.

I have them in:

270 win,30-06,300 win mag,30-378 wby,338-378 wby,338 LM,338 win mag,8.59 Lazz. Titan,375 H&H and 30-416 Rigby.

You hit the nail on the head, describing the system, cheesy it is. I have been contemplating that tact exactly but was hesitant until I figured out if the mag actually was spose to have a lip in that location or not.

I had no other magazines to compare it to to determine if such a lip on the mag exists. But if you guys can verify one is spose to be there, this is the issue..

Other things that came to mind were: First thought is the flat spring has lost it temper, nephew prob stored it with the mag in all time. Second thought is to tweek the upper, aft wall of the magazine like you suggest or maybe tweek the spring too. Thirdly, come up with a tapered shim inside the mag well, tightening things up..

So to those who have magazines to look at, please let me know about the lip on the mag.

I have that exact gun. Mine has only 19 rounds through it. I have never had a problem but will take a look at the mag and post my findings as it is like brand new. Also if anyone knows where to get a OEM replacement please advise.

McMillan makes a replacement bottom metal to use with their stocks. It is just a little tighter and works with the factory mags.

I put one on my 30-378 and it fixed the problem....

I did some tweeking on the mag and it holds well and I did not note any additional dificulties inserting it (the modified mag) into the mag well.

I am unable to dislodge it on the bench shy of taking a hammer and dowel to it. It drops just the same as the un-modified. It appears to have solved the problem. However I expect it to be something that will require paying attention too.

Thanks elkregulator for the Mcm info, will take a look at this. However, this may be a simple quick & economical fix. Field use and time will tell.

Probably related to tensioning of the action screws... Maybe your recoil lug is not fully seated?

hogan, the one I looked at didn't have a recoil lug. There is a transverse notch in the front bottom of the receiver that traps a bridge of bedding (or the molded stock). It actually looks to me like the 3 action screws might be recoil lugs. That is also cheesy. I need to add that otherwise I am impressed with the apparent strength and quality of the receiver and bolt themselves. With a decent recoil lug and a more positive magazine latch-in, the action would be a candidate for building boomers on. Sako chambers this action in several boomer calibers, so I know it's strong enough, and I could be all wrong about what looks cheesy to me, but it does.
