Sako 6mm PPC

Hello,

I just scored an unfired Sako single-shot 6mm PPC for next to nothing. It is beautifully made. Nice teeny action. Nice trigger. Does anyone have experience with the Sako 6mm PPC factory rifle and what kind of accuracy I can expect? Is it better to fireform 220 Russian brass or just use Norma factory brass? I'd like to behin load development with Nosler 55gr Ballistic Tips. Any pet loads? Thank You!

Great rifle. You can expect very good accuracy. 1/2" or under would be the norm for a good worked up load. Sako brass would be the easiest. Lapua 220 r brass is of course excellent but you will need to neck turn it a little bit for it to fit the Sako chamber then fireform.

That is excellent info. So the Sako chamber is pretty tight, then. Do you know what diameter the loaded neck should be to clear?

It's best to do a chamber cast to find out for sure. I haven't had one but have heard that they are too tight for Lapua 220 brass.

Does it look like these? I have three of them......FANTASTIC rifles! VERY accurate right out of the box........

Oh Yeah!

Just like those, except it is a single-shot with an externally adjustable trigger. This is by far the best rifle purchase I have ever made. I just hope it lives up to its reputation. I think Sako chambers these with a .270" neck, judging by Shilen's reamer list), and 220 Russian brass needs a .272" chamber to clear. What about Norma brass? What does a Norma neck measure?

The 222 in the picture has a magazine, the PPC rifles pictures are single shot. All of them have an externally adjustable trigger. All I need is the 223 to complete the set. I believe these are the only four calibers they were chambered in........

The middle rifle has a B&L scope, does it not? Are you using high or medium rings? Mine came with the same scope, but I'm going to change the rings to Leupold ringmounts. i just don't know which height to get.

Is it a 6PPC or 6PPC-USA? As far as my experience goes, the Sako factory were all PPC - USA. If yours is a PPC-USA, no need to turn necks. Use whichever brand of brass you want. I usually went Norma.
I shot mine in club score matches, and on a good day could get around 15X. Not nearly good enough to win, but enough to keep in the middle/lower part of the herd. I used Berger bullets, mostly.
Never shot varmints with it, so I have zero experience in that area.
N133 powder and a benchrest bullet will have you printing tiny groups.
Those are beautiful rifles, congrats on your purchase.

You've got yourself an extremely accurate rifle. I sold my much loved SAKO Vixen which too was very accurate thinking that one of those heavy barreled target/varmint versions would be even more so. I didn't like it from the minute I received it because it was just far too heavy. I just turned around and sold it with 600 rounds of fresh factory rounds still in the orange and white boxes.
I still am remorseful about the sale of the Vixen. I've learned that you should never sell until you've bought a received the replacement you 'thought' you wanted. Now I just can't afford another Vixen since their prices have gone into the stratosphere~!

I'm the proverbial "Lapua snob" but this is an exception. I don't suggest loading to benchrest pressures in that little action and since you're loading to moderate pressures, the Norma brass just makes a lot of sense in that rifle. Also, other than just a few break in rounds maybe, I suggest not wasting time shooting the 55's unless that's what you plan to shoot in the gun for the most part, once you get a load worked up.

Old thread but still neat rifles. I have two Sako sporters in 6PPC and 22PPC, factory rifles, repeaters. Very accurate rifles. I’ve added to my stash of Sako brand brass over the years for those rifles, works great.

My custom built .262 necked 6PPC was delivered by the builder with 50 loaded rounds. I have no idea what reamer was used to cut the chamber. Those rounds were built on SAKO brass with the load information which used a 62.5 GR Watson bullet over H322 powder. I have 40 of those original rounds left. The original rounds were literally one holers. Since that SAKO cartridge is no longer available I have purchased a bunch of once-fired Lapua brass which I've had to devote far, far too much time rebuilding to chamber in my rifle. I don't enjoy that at all. In fact, the effort is a royal PITA~!
If SAMMI had set a standard for the 6PPC I believe the cartridge would have liver a much longer 'active life'~!
