So, I need help from you experts. I recently bought from a gentleman a Sako 375 Magnum. The rifle is in very good condition. My problem is I can't seem to find a model for this thing. I'm hoping someone can tell me a model and approximate value.
I'll start with the barrel. On the left side closest to the receiver there are 2 stamps. They look to be designs of some kind. Just to the right of the stamps is the number 112206, which I assume is a serial number. There is absolutely nothing else on the left side of the barrel.
On the right side, close to the receiver are the words MADE IN FINLA, the N is barely readable and the D is not there. I assume this is because of the taper on the barrel. About two cm to the right of that are the words Bofors Steel with a B type of symbol and arrow going through it on either side. There is nothing else written or stamped on the right side of the barrel.
On top of the barrel closest to the receiver is printed .375 MAGNUM, no H&H printed anywhere.
On the front of the barrel is a large sight. The sight wraps completely around the end of the barrel with a thin piece of metal on the bottom. On the top it raises over a cm above the barrel with a taper that comes back toward the receiver about 5 cm or more in length. at the very top of the sight is a small piece that appears to be pressed on or in. This piece is about 1.5 cm long and .3 tall.
The barrel is 24 inches long. I don't see any other identifying marks or characteristics on the barrel. Nothing is printed on the bottom and I did take it apart from the stock.
The receiver, on top are 4 screw holes. The front to I would assume are for the old rear sight that was taken off to accommodate a scope. The front two are about 2 cm apart and the rear two are about 1 cm apart. On the left side of the receiver are a couple of symbols stamped and hidden by the stock this is also where the bolt release is. On the right side of the receiver, just behind where the shells are ejected, there are 2 other screw holes, these are about 1.5 cm apart and appear to be there to accommodate something? Maybe a second type of sight? This is something I'm curious about. The stock even has a cut out area like it wants to allow something to go there. On the bottom of the receiver are various numbers and symbols. 9 8 and 2 are clear perhaps a number 4 is there also.
The trigger is hard to describe, I would say it's about half the size of a Remington 700 trigger. The safety is on the right side top and slides forward and back.
The bolt is also hard to describe, it appears that there are two main lugs on is on the top front and the other is at the back and bottom of the bolt. There is a protruding piece on the bolt that hides behind the ejector piece in the locked position and rotates to the top to give the bolt a smooth place to slide when open. It looks like the bolt rotates about 90 degrees to open and shut. Upon closer look it appears there is a bottom front lug too.
The stock, at the front of the stock is a black plastic end or hard material of some sort, about 5 cm long. Just behind this black part on the bottom is a round protruding piece with an eye to allow a sling mount. The front grip of the stock is a stretched out X shape with what I would call crisscross pattern for traction or grip. Just behind this and where the front part of the receiver slides in is a piece of metal that runs through the stock and has round metal pieces on either side that you can see. Underneath this location is where the first screw goes in for the receiver.
Next down the line is the drop plate, with a spring attached. The plate is hinged in the front and has a latch on the front side of the trigger guard. There are no engravings or stamps on the plate or trigger guard. On the left side of the stock at this point is the bolt release. You can see where the stock is notched down to allow it to fit in there nicely. On the opposite side is a notched out are to accommodate something?? The notch is cut out in a 45 degree downward angle away from the receiver. It is between where the notch is for the bolt handle and the spot where the shells are ejected. About 3 cm in length.
The rear grip has the same crisscross pattern and the front side has half and X the rest of it is rounded down and straight at the bottom. Just below this is a round plate that is black and looks to be the same material as the front of the stock.
On the left side of the stock is a raised cheek rest. The rest looks like none I have ever seen, it is sculptured and contoured like almost a separate piece of wood. It is all one piece though. This piece you could put a marble in and it would ride in the contours. The right side is just smooth. Underneath this location is another sling mount.
The butt pad is a brownish rubber with a triangular hole pattern in it. It is mounted to a thin piece of the black material that is found on the front of the stock. The pad also says, SAKO RIIHIMAKI SUOMI FINLAND.
I hope this is enough info for someone to give me an idea of what I have here. I am hoping for a model number, and explanation of the screw holes on the right side of the receiver and an approximate value. I also would like to find a rear sight and a piece to fit the holes in the receiver on the right side if anyone can help me out there too.
Let me know if anyone wants pictures or my email.
Thanks,
