Sako 22PPC

I have a Sako 22PPC rifle, with heavy barrel and beavertail forend. I cannot find any model number stamped on it. The action is clearly marked "SAKO 22PPC A 040" and the 040 appears under the bolt handle indicating its the serial no. It seems it is Model L461 by the description, caliber and serial no., but I cannot find that on the gun anywhere. Is this a Sako L461?

Yep, its an L461according to s/n marking

Thanks. Is it an early one or something? The ones I see online are stamped L461 22PPC where mine just has an "A". Just want to be sure what model it is.

L461 has different open bolt shroud and safety. Sako had to change to please the lawyers! There is also a benchrest model S491. Your rifle made about Oct. 1987, first year of the A model. The S491 was later added
August 1992.

Nope not L461. It's an A action as the prefix in the serial number indicates.
They also reference the A’s as the L461model. The pdf wouldn’t post, but here’s a screenshot. So it’s an A model of the L461 series I suppose.

Thanks for clarifying

I had an old retired rancher who was an ffl order me in a new Sako L461 Vixen in 223 back in 1971, which I still have. Several years ago, a good high power shooting friend offered me a Sako A in 6PPC from an old gentleman's estate. We've both looked it over carefully, and borescoped it with a Hawkeye, and believe it to be in new, unfired condition. I bought it because I'd read a bit about the PPCs that Sako built, but still haven't fired it. One of these days.... It came in the factory box, which says Vixen on the end label, and the s/n is A817.

These Sako 'Benchrest' AI action single shots were made in 3 serial ranges, A, B, C 001-999? The number of actual produced guns is debatable. They were made in .22 and 6 PPC USA. They came with the excellent externally adjustable BR trigger. Sako also put these triggers on their Heavy bbled repeaters in both AI and AII actions. These were made in the mid to late 80's.

Old thread, but I just ran across it, thought I would share a little bit of information I learned while it was true that the three serial ranges AB and C were made in 6 PPC in the heavy barrel apparently only 553 rifles were made in 22 PPC in the heavy barrel A serial #’s

It is an action made after the bolt shroud was added during the importing by Stoeger in the early 1980’s. I have a 6mm and a 22 PPC that are consecutive numbers. These guns were made as single shots for target shooting, #20 is the 6mm PPC that Louis Palmisano gave a gun writer friend of mine when Sako first made these rifles. The trigger and safeties are different than what Sako put on their A1 actions of the same era.

They are superb shooters and the trigger can be adjusted to work as light as a set trigger…
