Looking at buying a new gun safe.

Has anyone bought one of the Steelwater safes? If so what is your impression of them.

Buy bigger than you think you need!
No matter which "brand" you buy, as stated get it bigger than you think you need.
All safe companies NEVER count guns w/scopes, slings bipods etc. in their "counts", just naked stripped bare ones. If it says it holds 12, that will be only 7-8 scoped rigs, maybe.

I have a Redhead, well, I also have a blonde but that's another story. I bought the Redhead at Bass Pro Shop about 12 years ago. This unit is in a dry basement and I've never had a moisture problem. It weighs close to 800 pounds. I say that because on its own a safe will only protect your things from honest crooks. I built a closet around the safe so if they want to steal it, they have to tear the closet apart first. I was told by a locksmith elsewhere before the purchase there is nothing wrong with the key pad safes. The keypad is just as good as the rotary dial safes but the bulk of his service calls are for keypad safes. Hmmm? I went with the rotary dial and have had no problems.

I absolutely agree that you should buy a safe BIGGER than you need. And buying a safe is not something you do very often. I've never heard of the brand OP is asking about. But buy a quality safe that will last you FOREVER and spend a little extra to get the best you can afford.

Look at Sturdy Safes before you buy any thing can't beat them for the money, when I get my pennies together this will be the one I buy don't think you will have to worry about some one getting into it ;)

ditto on buying next size up and if you do run out of room then thats a good thing ;) - you can always buy another safe --catch teh sale at tractor supply at Christmas on their line of safes- i have two and both have keypads - fort knox and liberty never had a problem with either one of the keypads and only changed batteries twice in 15 years on the fort knox - fire ratings are all very close when comparing and notice weight and extras that come on the inside like receptacle for golden rod/lights

I thought the video was very informative and worth watching . I learned a lot in 27 minutes.

KT,
I own a Hayman commercial safe, excellent, about 1400 lbs. You need to look at security features like hardened plates against drill attack and glass plate re lockers. Place it where it is not vulnerable to attack from the top, back or sides. Thru bolt to concrete floor and back thru concrete wall. Consider a safe alarm along with a 2 hour fire rating minimum. Also, no digital dials, get a manual Sargeant and Greenleaf dial. Watch the estate sales for good used safes.

I needed to update from 2 cheap Homak safes and found a Liberty (Lincoln series safe) on Craigs list. Paid $750 for a safe that was in pristine condition.
You should buy more (bigger) than you think is needed as "things" do tend to accumulate.

I'm buying my first safe this weekend. Found one on CL. It's a cheapie and probably junk compared to anything that one would consider a real safe. I'm getting it mostly to have a place to consolidate all my guns and gear which isn't much at the moment. When we get in to a new house this year (hopefully), I'll be getting a real safe or perhaps even a secure block wall closet in the basement for my stuff.

I'm already at the point of needing a bigger safe. Specifically one that is tall. My competition rifles are just to tall for the safe I have now. I have to turn them sideways to get them in. I put a scratch in my stock the other day and got pissed. So that's why the sudden interest.

I have been looking at 72x40x30 apx sized safes.
Champion
Steelwater
Liberty
Heritage.

They all seem to be around the same prices. The liberty may be April or may before I can get it.
The Champion and Heritage dealer here has a 350 dollar fee to deliver. (plus he's a bit of an arrogant ass so I really don't want to buy from him)

So i'm torn between the Steelwater and Liberty.

I was just hoping one of the forum members had a steelwater.

KT,

Check your local Gander Mountain - mine has Liberty's in stock with free delivery (25 miles). They had a taller version of the Fatboy 64 that I bought. Don't recall the name or model. If it's in stock, or the floor model, you can have it in a few days instead of months. I have no GM affiliation.

I've had a Browning since 2000, it weighs like 1200 lbs. and again suppose to hold 30 guns. I think I can squeeze 20 in it if I had to. Its rated for 1200 degrees for 1/2 hour or so. But I also Have ADT for back up when the dealer told me that a guy had two of these in his wareHouse, and some Maggots when through the sides of the safe with a Concrete saw! So make sure its backs and sides are in a wall.

Only keeps out the honest people.

I will say Safes only keep honest people out. I have a cold saw that will cut the hardest steel plate in seconds.

When someone asks me about safes I recommend "Drake Safes" not cheap but not the most expensive. Very well made and heavy. Drake Safe Company is in Roxboro, NC.
