Sabot v. rifle slug

horrible. use rifled slugs in a smooth bore shotgun and use a sabot slugs in a rifled barreled shotgun. Never use rifled slugs in a rifled barrel shotgun! I take it you are going to IL to deer hunt in 2 weekends?

Easiest way to remember is that rifled slugs provide their own spin, sabots need it from the barrel.

I have used Rem rifled and Win "Rack Master" rifled slugs with good results, but Win say you can use their sabot slugs and I was a bit curious about them.

Rifle slugs do not spin. The onlt thing the rifleings do is help sell slugs, and rifled slugs will shoot ok in rifled barrels, as stated before, the riflings on a slug do nothing but sell slugs and do nothing for accuracy. Rifle slugs get what accuracy they have from having a hollow base that makes them act like a shuttle cock.

I tried rifled slugs in a rifled Mossberg 20ga rifled barrel. Leaded up bad, took a lot of work to remove it. Actually came off in strips.

Its states right on the box "dont use in rifled barrel". Only use sabot slugs in a rifled barrel slug gun. Thats why a box of rifled slugs cost $6 and a box of sabots cost $18. Being from IL we are only allowed to deer hunt with shotguns. Now they have these rifled barrel shot guns (slug guns). I own one. They are actually pretty accurate. I can hit a whte paper plate from 100 yards standing up every shot. I never really tried seeing how good of groups I could get with it using a rest or bags. I want to buy one of those new Savage bolt action rifled barrel slug guns. I hear they are very accurate. Anybody have one? Seen a few youtube videos of people being accurate with them at 250 yards. Alot of people shoot the 20 gauge instead of the 12 gauge. I guess alot less kick and they push the lighter 20 gauge slugs just as fast as the heaver 12 gauge slugs. I tell you what the 12 guage 3 inch 1 ounce slugs kick hard!!! It will leave your shoulder bruised and sore after 5 shots.

Back when I hunted deer in Ohio (with the same slug rules as IL), I used 20 ga slugs. Plenty of energy with the 20 ga and I always felt they were more accurate. I also mounted a holographic sight on the slug barrel.

Stinnett,

I can remember when I was younger and reading about guys in PA and other areas that would take those old Stevens and Mossburg bolt action shotguns and shooting them benchrest style with slugs.. all the advancements in shotgun slug design came from those guys back in the day.
