S&W Model 41 SR-71 Special

Weird, and aside from whatever it is that is mounted on top, it's a shortened barrel, and threaded. Have to figure that it was relined, as it would be quite involved to turn down the existing barrel to machine in those threads up front.
And what is that little thing at the back of the slide?

I wonder if they had some kind of holster for it. Overall iit looks like it would be a worthless tool and useless for quick shots, shots in low light, or conditions like rain or fog. My belief is that they were designed for taking small game when evading and living off the land. When the Russians shot down Gary Powers in 1960 he had an integrally suppressed High Standard HD Military. In other words; for it’s intended purpose it was another waste of taxpayer money.

In 1960 dollars the Blackbird cost 33 million to build. As far as survival goes, a tool that doesn't work reliably in all conditions is not an asset, it's a liability. The 41 in 1960 cost 90 dollars and change, so it was economical.
