running a 1:9 twist for .223

+1 for the 73 gr Berger. Shoots the best out of my savage precision carbine with factory 1-9 twist. The 70 gr Vld also shoots really well but is more sensitive to seating depth.
The 69gr tsmk and smk are almost as good as the bergers.

Having placed the Tikka T3x Varmint on order I'm going to definitely give the 73gnBergers a go. Will do a bulk in something and just play with one or two particular projectiles for a while.

I have a Tikka T3X lite on the way for my daughter, I was planning on the 69g SMK for now. I am going to buy a box of the FGGM 69g to see if it likes that. If I rebarrel it I will go to a 7.5tw to be able to run 80g Berger's

I may try the 73g Berger like the above said...

I bought some Hornady match with the 73g ELD. We will see.

Not "all day long", but the SMK 69's with IMR 8208 XBR shot very well from my factory Howa 1500 with a 1:9 twist. Here's a screen shot of an Excel worksheet of the best 30 groups, nearly all 5-shot groups at 100 yards. I wish all my guns and all my various calibers did as well as this combination, that's for sure.

Now I wanna try 8208xbr in my 223 with 69smk.
Thaaanks.

Hi .223 shooters

I'm seriously considering picking up a .223 in a factory offering for the purposes of F-open/field shooting in shorter ranges and occasionally knocking small fluffy things. 1:9, med Varmint contour, 24" barrel.

I'm really interested in the experience people might have had in getting projectiles in the 68-75gn range to stabilize and group from .223 with a 1:9 twist and if you had found there were any particularly good projectile types for this twist rate.

Thanks in advance

I use a Remington 700 PSS with a 9 twist. 69 SMK and Berger 70 VLD AA2520 goes thru the measure like water, but Varget still groups a bit better but I weigh every charge. The 2520 throws very consistently when I'm lazy and don't want to weigh charges.

You should be able to get your 80gn pills running out of a 1:8 tw of a Tikka Varmint

I have a few barrels that won't shoot anything that heavy. Unless you are a gambler and can live with what might not meet your expectations, go a bit faster.

Already have mate
I went with a Tikka Varmint with a 24” barrel and 1:8 twist. Looking forward to giving it run soon.
