RUGER QUESTION 22/45

I have a Ruger 22/45 Lite, does this gun need match ammo or can I use the cheap stuff. The last time out I was having misfire problems with cheap ammo. I thought maybe the firing pin wasn't hitting hard enough for cheap ammo.

I think I have one. It wont run cheap bulk ammo. Have to use something of better quality junk.

Best cheap I found was a 333 count in a white box. Cant remember what it was. But the bulk 550 remington/winchester junk wouldnt work at all.

I haven't shot mine for quite awhile, but I don't remember it having issues with any cheap bulk ammo. When's the last time it was cleaned? Do you have other mags you could try?

Mine runs the cheap stuff ok, have a hick upon occasion, nothing serious! I find that if I limp wrist it, it will cause more issues!!

The OP has stated misfire issues, so I seriously doubt a change in magazine will do anything for that (post #4). A good cleaning of the bolt could. While not a 22/45, I do have a MK III Comp Target and haven't had ignition issues. Cheapest ammo ever ran through it was CCI SV. It did have feeding issues with one lot of that, but it was due to that lot having excessive lube on the bullets. I use Norma Tac-22 and Match-22, or SK-RM in it now with no issues.

Test different brands after a good cleaning of the fire control system. Keep in mind, that different lots of the same brand may give different results, like the CCI I mentioned above.

I have had numerous Ruger semi auto 22 rimfire Standard auto and Mark series pistols come through my shop for misfires on a fairly regular basis, all have been cured by first cleaning the gunk out of the bolt, the checking the firing pin tip width, all were too wide I reduced the tip width to .025"then check the pin to be sure it has enough protrusion to get good contact with the cartridge rim but not hit the barrel so it doesn't damage the chamber when dry fired and last check the firing pin for free movement in the slot it lives in in the bolt so there is no binding on the sides or bottom, this has always cured the misfires except for an occasional dud cartridge.
I hope this helps have a great day.

Hell.. I shoot Fed blue box bulk in mine and don't get misfires. My main ammo for it is CCI standard velocity. Ironically I have more misfires with EU match ammo than I do with USA made ammo.

They get carbon layered between the bolt and barrel and it get ironed on there and hard to get off. Once it builds up youll get some misfires. Ive been shooting the ruger autos with cheap ammo all my life. They love eating up the cheap stuff with an occasional hiccup

I've got one with a can on it and it feeds and fires everything I put in it. Some of the sub ammo won't cycle the action, but they do fire.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Rugers are notorious for eating anything feed in the mag. If you have ignition issues, cleaning is the first thing to try. While bulk junk should run fine, get a brick of CCI Mini mag and if you have cycling issues try a few of those. They tend to cycle guns that weaker ammo wont. If as you say the firing pin has light strikes grab new spring, thay are cheap enough shipping will probably cost you more than the spring itself. Ruger Mark line has been so popular because it is reliable and eats everything.

I used one for informal bullseye matches successfully. My only modification to the gun was a Volquartsen trigger. I used CCI Std ammo. Yes, a lot of this cheap bulk packed ammo is prone to misfires, unfortunately. Remington was a big offender. Basically, these are good, accurate guns. Sometimes you may need to tweak one of them.

I have had some good And some bad luck with this same gun . I have had 5 so far some run anything I put into the chamber and some will run on nothing. The one or two I still have run very well.
