Ruger No.1a Accuracy Load

I have a Ruger No. 1a in 7x57 and I am getting so-so accuracy from a variety of factory and reloaded ammunition. What is your accuracy load in this rifle combination?

140gn Hornady SST and 41gns IMR-4064 is pretty solid in a friends M98.

What have you tried that worked the best and what are you hoping for? The No. 1 can be a little finicky and there are a hand-full of "accurizing" tricks that you can try to get it to shoot better. Most all the tricks center around adjusting the way the forearm mates to the barrel and receiver to alter the barrel harmonics. Also can look into a Hick's Device for it.

If you have run out of loading ideas, try looking at the various accurizing tricks here:

I have found that my rifle shoots 139-154gr bullets best. The groups average around 1-3/4 inches. Obviously sometimes better; sometimes worse (a lot of it is the loose screw behind the gun). I was told that this rifle shoots heavier bullets best, so I tried a variety of them. These groups average over 2 inches.
I am not looking for benchrest accuracy, but I would like to find a load that consistently averages closer to one inch. It is a deer rifle, and my current ammunition would kill a deer, but I am fussy.

I still need to order the barrel for the build i'm doing for my daughter.
Plan is for 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tips.
Problem is the getting the right chamber reamer.
The original chamber is done for a 173gr round nosed bullet.
And SAAMI & CIP specific chambers will have the throat(freebore?) for these bullets. Aka, long!
And that before any jump the bullet may get.
So in SAAMI chambers, a heavier bullet may work better. Concentricity is key!

You may start with a 140gr SPBT, or tipped, seated out so the base of the shank is even with the nech/shoulder junction.
H414, or IMR4831 would be decent powders to start with.

Good luck!

My #1's responded very well to removing the 'bump' at the end of the forearm and free floating the barrel. Then glass bed the rear of the forearm to the receiver and small area around the forearm screw. Have never tried the Hicks device and though it should work in theory, it still depends upon where the forearm is touching the barrel.
