I know some of you guys shoot Ruger rifles ( M77) on here, and i was wondering What you done as to replaceing the trigger. Every one i have tryed is horrible. What if any is a good replacement trigger. I need it to adjust to 1lb or less. I am looking at buying a rifle but i want a good tirgger. Am i asking to much?

Thanks T 700

Re: Ruger Trigger Question???

If your inquiry is regarding the model 77, it depends on which generation 77 you have.

Re: Ruger Trigger Question???

Yes it is the M77. If i could find a very nice Tang Safety I may get one, But if not I would like to get a MarkII, And if everything fails one of the new Hawkseyes.

Also forgot to ask the Varmint triggers Ruger offers, does anybody know the weight from the factory?

Howdy !

My mid-70's vintage M-77 Sporter in .250 Savage accpeted a " Canjar " set trigger. Push the little trigger shoe forward ( similar to that seen on recent Savage rifles ), and trigger release is in the 4oz range. Use as a stragith trigger, and pull is in the multiple-pounds force range.

IF your rifle can accept a Canjar trigger, and if you can put your hands on one; IMHO... they are a great choice.

here is a canjar for a Model 98...dont know if it would work on a ruger...fyi..others may know if it will fit

Why would you want to change out a M77 tang safety trigger??? They are very nice fully adjustable triggers.

It's easy to get the old tang m77s triggers down to a pound. That's where I have mine on the 2 tang m77 rifles i own. The old tang triggers are externally adjustable for pull weight and a lot nicer than most aftermarket triggers you can buy. No creep or overtravel at all. Just got to know how to rub them the right way :)

Now for the Ruger Mark II triggers...those are COMPLETE JUNK! Replace as soon as humanly possible! :)

There is one item out there that is an easy swap and it is the sear thet Rifle Basix makes for the old Tang 77. I put one in my mid 70's .280 Remington which I could not adjust the trigger light enough for my taste. It brought it down to just under a pound with a nice crisp let off. they are reasonably priced and very easy to install. You retain the original trigger, just drop in the sear.

Thanks for the replys, I like the idea of changing the sear. The last one i took apart was a bear to get back in.

Thanks T 700

If you find the right gunsmith capable and willing to work on
the Ruger trigger, they can be very nice.
I had Bob Brackney tune up the trigger on my 77 Mark II. It is sweeeeet ;)
Breaks at 3.5 pounds. Nice and crisp with no creep.

I agree with JRS. I had 2 of my Rugers worked over for $25 each. This was about 10 years ago, price is probably double now. I am very happy they both break around 3lbs and have not changed since work was done.

I just sanded and polished the original sear on my M77 tangs. Pretty simple if you know how to do it. Just gotta make sure you don't take too much off so it's still safe. Clean, crisp, repeatable breaks at 1 pound on both rifles after sear polishing
