I agree now. That would open up a world of possibilities. So youre saying it would basically be a sort of "reducer bushing" to utilize a standard AR barrel correct?

This rifle has reawakened my interest in long-range shooting. As a result of reading about it on the Net, I found my way back to this fine forum.

So for me, the question is which caliber to go with if the intended use is target shooting from the bench... the 26 inch 243 or 24 inch 6.5CM?

I shoot paper out to 300 yards and steel out to 1000.

I am leaning heavily towards the 6.5 but I don't want to write off the 243 just yet. I know the 243 will burn through the barrel faster but given the ease of changing barrels I'm not too worried about that.

i was GOING to get a 243....but considering it's mag fed....that means it takes way too much case capacity to run the dtacs or maybe even the 105's...

anyone care to shed light on that?

I think thit 6.5 is the best of both worlds. Not quite the ballistics of 243 but twice the barrel life probably.
Better ballistics than 308 but less than half the barrel life.

Next Sunday I'm taking it to a 1000 yard prone match. I'll report how I do.

I found one in 6.5CM . Had to drive a bit to get it, but got it at $899 in an adjacent state.

Pulled the trigger group, cleaned it and lubed it per Ruger's instructions and it's very hard to believe this is a factory trigger even with the blade safety.

First shots today if the weather holds.

If those groups are consistent it will be a great deal.

Guy on my local forum is a long range rifle instructor (former Marine sniper) and is supposed to be getting one in for a review. I'm anxious to hear his words because he doesn't mince them.

Got out yesterday and ran 32 rounds of the Hornady 120 AMAX thru the rifle.

Expended most of them zeroing an old scope and getting the ergo's set up on the rifle . Two decent groups at the end, one 0.7 MOA and one 0.6 MOA. Clearly the rifle is capable of better if I were to do a better job.

Overall, I am impressed. Now, I'm no national level shooter, but I can hold my own down here among the heat and humidity. I think this rifle will get it done with some judicious handloading and a better optic.

As more and more gunsmiths get set up to contour & fit replacement bbls for this new Ruger, I'll wager that there will be a considerable number of them purchased just to get the chassis/action. Probably will be more than a few OEM bbls pulled before they're ever fired, and replaced by a custom one chambered for suitable cartridges like 6XC, 6x47 & 6.5x47 Lapua, etc. Even going that route, it's probably the least expensive way to get into a match-ready rifle with the features this one's got.

Looks like Patriot Valley is geared up and making barrels for them already.
In quite a few chambers.

I picked my Ruger up for $1100 after tax.
Even with a $600 barrel it's a $1700 rifle.
IF it shoots well, it's worth it.

I know that for $1k more you can have a very nice custom rifle.
But I like this Ruger.
I shot it at 1k yards and shot a 187 and a 183. I was right with the other guys
Who shot yesterday. Lots of Mirage. I probably should have turned my scope down.

I FINALY got lucky 2 weeks ago, walked into Cabalas Sunday morning and one of the kids at there gun counter was walking out of the back room with one in his hands, I ask him if it was a 243- he said yes- I said I will take it. 1295.00, its a lot of gun for that kind of money. went to the range that afternoon to dial the scope in and break in the barrel, 30 rounds. A young fireman at the other end of the range I know had to come up to see what I was shooting, he fell in love with it - I know this kid can shoot,( kind of like I used to) gave him 20 rounds and he went back to his bench and started shooting 30 min. later he is back with my gun and the target. He had 3 groups- 2, a shade over and 1, a good sub 1/2 inch I think its a keeper. After hunting season is over I will start playing with it. Carl in Yakima

A friend of mine happened upon a 6.5 Creedmoor about a week ago. He bought it, we mounted a Nightforce BR scope and did some testing/break in at the 100 yard range today. I must say, I'm impressed. He had Rl-17 on hand and he reloaded from 39.5-42 grains behind a 140g amax. All groups were very solid with the best at 41.5 followed closely be 42.0g of powder. 41.5g basically made one ragged hold at 100 yards.........easily a half inch group 10 shots. Speed out of its 24" barrel was just about 2750 FPS with 42.0g of RL-17. None of the loads showed any pressure signs at all so a node beyond that should be obtainable.

Bottom line, it's not a custom rifle. But for its price, it is a very nice, Fclass, prone, XTC tactical match, do anything rifle. Dare I say it's close to a Tubb 2K for about one fourth the price. Anyone looking for a nice rifle to get starting in any type of competition will be hard pressed to beat this Ruger.

The rifle WILL shoot.
