Ruger compact

I bought a Ruger M77 compact 16.5"bbl .308 yesterday. I have shot Rem. 7600 carbines in 308 and 30/06 for years. Having been spoiled by the accuracy of my new 6BR this year and that New York state has opened rifle hunting around my house this season. I decided to try for a rifle with alittle more accuracy than my pump guns but still be manuverable in the dense cover I hunt. I have several questions I hope you folks can help me with. 1st of all the Ruger data states this gun has a 1:10 twist, I measured it at 1:11 with my cleaning rod with one full rotation from point A to point B. Is it possible to have that much difference? 2nd I have gotten 1.25"-1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with the 7600's using 150gr Speer bullets. Any suggestions for bullet/powder combinations for this new gun and what kind of accuracy I should be expecting? Lastly with it being a very light gun I was thinking of having it Magna Ported, does anyone have experience with this and how will affect my accuracy and recoil? Thank you for any input you can give me.

I have a Remington 600 with an 18 inch barrel in 308. It is loud enough as it is, so I cannot even conceive what it might be like if it were Mag-Na-Ported. On a 16.5 inch barrel, it would probably make your ears bleed.

Like Marty and Shooter74, I highly recommend starting out with Varget. My 600 gets really good accuracy with Varget and Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tips. Just be aware that to get maximum velocity with this bullet and Varget, you end up with a compressed load. I have not felt the need to get to that point, as my rifle shoots quite well at the lower end of the loading table.

As to accuracy, well I can't help you there. My experience with Rugers has been poor, and I sold them off. I would have been happy with the same accuracy your 7600 is giving. Your experience may be different. I hope so.

My hunting buddy got one of those little Rugers for his girlfriend and it really shot with 46 grs. IMR 4895 and 125 gr Nosler ballistic tips. She killed a bunch of deer dead in their tracks with this load. It got me to try the same load in my custom Rem. 700 22 inch Heart barrel 308. It averages 3075 fps from my rifle and I have killed around 20 deer with this load and have not had a single one take a step after being hit.

The 125 Nosler ballistic tip will give less recoil, that is the reason that my buddy tried it out for his girl friend. It is an extremely accurate bullet in everything I have tried it in. I am going to try it out in my 30X47 HBR on deer this year at 2850 fps. I also have read of people that use it with great success in 30 cal . pistols from 30-30, 300 Savage, 308 etc. It is not a bullet to try and shoot a deer in the butt and try to get to the lungs but with any shoulder angel shot either going in of coming out a shoulder or a chest shot it drops them in their tracks.
