Ruger barrel on Tikka action question

I have a question for any gunsmith on here with real-world knowledge on the subject. I know Winchester, Tikka and Ruger share the same tenon diameter and tpi specs but can I reasonably expect to screw on a Ruger barrel to a Tikka action and then just worry about setting headspace? Would it be a problem to set headspace on this swap? Thanks

The tenon lengths are different, You would still need machine work and chamber reaming most likely, And even though they are close, The diameters would be where one may thread onto one action and the other not thread onto to the other action.

I have re-purposed Tikka barrels onto Mosin Actions and the threads are very close, But the mosin tenon is longer and has a major dia of 0.980 so you have to chase the threads a little, But they are accurate barrels that used to be cheap, The new take off barrels sell for too much now to make it worth it.

I built a 6.5 PRC on a Mosin using a brand new take off varmint Tikka 6.5 Creedmoor barrel and it has been a very accurate Long Range rifle. The Tikka barrel steel can be kind of gummy, Or sticky to ream the chambers on though, It makes frightening noises but in the end it turns out ok. That's the only way I can explain it, I will do more as I bought several barrels a long time ago, But it's a little nerve racking the way they machine.

Thank you Sniperhandle. Just the type of information I was hoping to find. One more question. If I have my gunsmith extend the threads so I can put on a barrel nut and headspace it like a Savage or Remage system would that eliminate the problem of different tenon lengths? I have already sourced the barrel nut.

Yes I would think that would be fine, The only thing I can think of is the Ruger barrel isn't as accurate of a barrel in my opinion, Unless it's one of the Douglas barrels that some of the red pad rifles came with. Get yourself a Nut barrel from Urbanrifleman.

I already have the Tikka T3 in 7 RM and a Ruger 6.5 PRC heavy barrel that already has the muzzle threaded so just for fun and curiosity sake I think I need to do the swap. I might be disappointed in the end but I might also end up with a nice accurate long rang hunting rifle.

Sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Just because.

I also enjoy doing projects that others might consider silly(although never a 6.5 PRC on a Mosin!). However, if I wasn't able to do all the work myself, I would think twice. If you need a smith to do the machining....maybe not so cheap.

I am very fortunate to know an excellent gunsmith that will entertain my quirky ideas. Like taking a 6.5 CM barrel from a Ruger RPR and making it work for an DPMS pattern AR-10....and it shot great! I never have to wait long and price is always reasonable. Sadly, he is retiring.
