Ruger american "next 700?"

I have been looking at the Ruger American To replace my heavy barrel gun for hunting..While looking at the gun from skeptical eyes I have found my self thinking that Ruger may have designed it for thought into the shooting sports type person in mind..Now I know every Remington person is gonna say hell no but I'm looking at the action and seeing dual cocking cams with three lug bolt and a round receiver that has pretty good looking power bedding grooves..I wonder if they made it so a Remington trigger would work? I would try to put a recoil lug and glass bed the power bedding spots on the receiver but I wonder how close is it from fitting in a Remington type stock? Just food for thought.. You could buy the gun cheaper then a Remington action would cost!!

If they changed the angled action screw, if the actions are now machined from tubular steel and not investment cast steel, if they improved upon their trigger, if they contracted their barrels to a manufacturer with tighter accuracy standards, if they redesigned their fire control mechanism to release it's FP with consistency on par with that of Remington's ignition system........that's a lot of if's.

the action is milled from 4140 molly with very clean machining. and the action screws are strait and the trigger is a accutrigger type with Remington type appearance.

good pictures of the RAR after the article.

I agree, I like the action at first look..Stock is a little cheap to me but for a budget gun It's a steal...But the bolt and receiver Ifeel be a good gun to build on..

After seeing the article I am impressed. At that price point, I was expecting them to come out with an injection molded plastic receiver ala Rem. model 770 POS. It will be interesting to see how that bedding system works.....but i suspect a skim coat of MarineTex will only improve it.

The rifles SHOOT, at least the 30-06 and 270's I've shot. The 06 has bolt retention issues but shoots HONEST sub 1/2" groups (3 shot). The 270 (mine) is 3/4 -ish with 110 Vmaxes to 150 NBT's. The seating depth base to ogive on the 270 is .135 " shorter than my Win mdl 70 and I can easiley touch the lands with the 110 Vmax and still use the magazine. @ $330-345 I'm impressed. I would like to see a WOOD stock option though.

Looks alot like the T/C Venture series rifles, ie smith and wesson. I had a customer bring a Predator model into my shop 308 and we loaded up some of my 150gr bullets I make and it just hammed them. I was very impressed to say the least.

Its funny because he called me and asked what kind fo a gun to buy for chasing coyotes and I said look at the Savage and Remmy cant go wrong there. Then he shows up with this t/c and I was impressed very much so.

I have not handled a newer Ruger but from pics it looks very simular to the T/C.

I think this new Ruger American is a significant step for them and I hope it will only be the introductory model with others added later. Like a Varmint version and a couple of different stocks. They openly stole some of the better ideas floating around from other manufacturers, but, so what? Every major bolt-action rifle known stole from Mauser. The Ruger is a good start.

This is somebody else s post on the subject:

Howdy y'all! I have been eyeballing these since they came out but haven't taken the plunge, until now. Today I picked one up in .270 (only one in stock) to answer some of the above hypotheticals. I pulled the action from the stock and checked the action screw spacing,4.563". This is very slightly longer than LA Savage actions. I checked it in a SA Savage stock I had on hand, if it didnt have the tang safety extension on the trigger housing it would drop in nicely. The rear action hole looks like it should line up, though of course the front screw hole in the stock would need adjustment.

The trigger is very nicely made and quite good. It has an extension to the rear that carries the tang safety slider. Some slight milling would be required in a stock to accommodate it, though I intend to modify it to project into the trigger guard like some Jewel units. It appears that a LA, round back Savage one piece rail would work though I'm just theorizing.

I pulled the barrel with very little effort, and was pleasantly surprised. The threads are 1"-16tpi, just like a Tikka T3........hmmmm. The breech face is non recessed so used or after market 700 barrels can be easily adapted. The approximate tenon length ( I moved the barrel nut before I thought to check) is .687. Adding a 700 style recoil lug will be easy, the action even has an index cut for the pin. The bolt is very smooth and nicely machined. Also of interest the bolt shroud is plastic and removes identically to a Tikka T3.

My plan is to order a LA Savage B&C tactical stock, use a 700 recoil lug and fit a used 18" 5R 700 barrel to the action. For this experiment I will do no truing and use the action as is. If I'm happy with the results I'll pick up another and go full tilt boogie on it. I'll keep y'all updated as I progress.

Interesting project. I take it that you would turn the barrel to fit whatever size recoil lug you intend to use, keep the factory barrel nut ( or make a new one ? ) . For the money, these seem like a pretty nice rifle . keep us posted !

When they chamber it in 22-250, I'll own one. I've seen the 30-06 shoot and it was under an inch @100 yards. It would be a joy to carry for big game.

Maybe if/when they do chamber a 22-250 they will turn the world on its head and twist it faster than a 1/14.

Ruger, Savage, Remington, Tikka, Howa, Browning, etc...they all make great rifles. BUT it isn't a 700...unless it's a 700!!! No it's not a 700 BUT I've NEVER had a 700 OUT OF THE BOX (I have a few ;)) shoot as good as the Ruger American WITHOUT ANY load development from 110gr VMaxs to 150 NBTs.
