Ruger 77 MK II

Just traded for a Ruger 77 MK II, in 260 rem. I have heard the accuracy potential for this cartridge is fantastic. It will be used as a deer, black bear, elk and winter time cougar hunting rifle. I am intrested in an aftermarket stock, and trigger. I would like to hear your ideas on stocks and triggers. I would also like to hear about your favotrite 260 hunting and long range varminting loads.

I have a mk II in 25-06, so I can't help you with any .260 loads. However, before you lay down a bunch of money on a trigger, try a reduced power spring from midway for around $3 or so. It made a big difference on my rifle and is a good 'hunting' trigger now (about 3lbs down from nearly 6). It is not nearly a benchrest trigger or anything, but a good starting point at $3 rather than spending 100 on a RB or a Timney that you may not like. I have not replaced the stock on my ruger, so I cannot comment on that either. I have heard they can be a pain to bed because of the footprint, but that is just hearsay. Just my .02, -if its even worth that.

Hogue makes a stock with a full length bedding block in them. I don't know how good of a stock they are. Mcmillan makes a stock for ruger but not sure if they make one for this model. I am pleased with the factory stock that is on my M77 mark II. My M77 mark II is in 220 swift. I had it bedded a few years ago. It was a good bedding job, but the gunsmith did say it was a pain in the A** to bed them with the way the front action screw goes in at a angle. It does shoot very well for a factory varmint hunting rifle.

I put a Rifle Basix trigger in mine. If you keep watch on the classified ads on this site you might get a good deal in one. I lucked up and got my trigger from this site for $60. Even as dumb as I am I put the trigger in myself and adjusted the pull to a good crisp 1.5# in about 30min.
