Ruger 77 Mark2 target in 6.5 creedmore

Hello all
I have a chance to pickup a clean 77 for a great price. What kind of accuracy can i expect from this gun/cal. combo.
I am a Savage man so i expect great things lol
Thanks

Wish I could offer a positive, inspiring answer but one of the my biggest disappointments in the past few years is buying a Ruger 77 MKII Target in .308. Was hoping to use it as a backup rifle for F/TR. Noticed right away that Ruger is still using slot head action screws in their target rifle. Savage and Remington have long since gone to allen socket screws.

Working up loads off a bench at my club`s 300 metre range, it quickly became apparent that the action screws would not stay tight. Tried rebedding the rifle with JB Weld but to no avail. Action screws still came loose.

Ordered allen socket action screws from Brownells for the Ruger 77. Message came back that the Ruger 77 allen screws are no longer available.

The Ruger has a laminated stock which you would think is heavy duty but tightening the action screws seemed to turn the laminate to mush which is why I rebedded with JB Weld. The laminate seems soft.

The Ruger Target rifle has a 2 stage trigger. It was so light out of the box that I couldn`t feel any pressure at the letoff point so heavied the pull up a bit. Gradually the pull became heavier and heavier unti it felt like the trigger was full of gravel. Two stage became a heavy one stage. Cleaned it out but to no avail.

Finally in disgust I traded the Ruger in on a Savage VLP in .308 and am happy with the Savage. A hard laminate that can withstand any pressure you put on it.

Not trying to rain on your parade. For Ruger`s sake hope I just got a bad one.

Good luck with your Creedmore.

Well there are some good and bad about the Ruger M77 mark II. I like it for a varmint rifle and that's about it. They are Accurate for a varmint gun. If you get into long range varmint hunting then you are going to have some headaches. I had two of these rifles. One I still have, but I may sell it in the furture. They do make for a good hunting rifle and are plenty accuarte for that. Biggest thing is the scope mounting system they have. You can over come that with the burris zee rings and do just find with that to get more eleivation out of your optic's for long range. However There are just better rifles out there if seeking anything other than a hunting rifle. The one M77 mark II I still have is in 220 swift. I really like this rifle for groundhog hunting. As bad as I hate to admit it I really think that I will be better off selling this rifle and building a 22br on a rem. or sav. action, or just have another barrel chamber to 22br and put it on my 6br and shoot both cal. in the varmint fields. I hate to run down the rifle. I have had a lot of fun with it over the years and enjoyed it but I do think it has about worn out it's welcome in my safe.

I have had a better experience with the Ruger Target .308. In stock form it shot into about .75" w/ Federal Match fodder. I did crack the tang area of the stock because I was over tightening the diagonal front action screw. Ruger replaced that stock gratis and I pillar and glass bedded the stock. At this point the groups shrunk down to .5 moa, again with factory match ammo.
At the moment it has been rebarreled with a Lilja tube in .243 and shoots like the dickens with hand loads (3"-4" groups @ 600 yds. prone w/ sling - DTAC 115s/Reloader 25). It has been a trouper of a rifle and I would buy another in a second.

Ruger is the favorite of people on the internet to bash - keep that in mind, and most have never even owned one.

I had the MKII VT in .243, it would shoot in the .2", I have the VT in 6.5 CM still and it shoots in the .2s as well.

Here's a group I did last week during load development at 200 yards, 5-shot, 140 A-max@2920FPS, Lapua .22-250 brass. I don't know what happened with the shot that went a little high and right.

ETA: If you bed the action using Devcon 10110 you won't ever have any issues with the action stresses or screws - I never had an action screw come loose on either of the two VTs I've owned, even before they were bedded. If you can get the Creedmoor for the right price do it, 62As are nice though, I personally wouldn't finance the Creedmoor by getting rid of the 62.

Midwayusa.com or opticsplanet.com.

You want the Burris Ruger to Weaver adapters: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=855239

And the Burris Signature Zee rings, they only have medium and high: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=416175

And last the Pos-Align inserts for .005", .010" and .020": http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=712472

Do yourself a favor while you're at it and get some Lapua .22-250 brass and make your Creedmoor brass from that, the Hornady stuff doesn't last long.

P.S. those rings are awesome, you'll find many of the people on this site are running them because they cause no binding on your scope, won't mar your scope, have a greater grip than other rings and because you can dial in specific MOA with them.
