ruger 7 Mag

i have a ruger 7mm mag paddle tail does anyone know what twist the barrel it would have & what's the heaviest bullet i can shoot the gun was given to me by my brother in law for $400 . don't know much about the gun .

According to the Berger reloading manual it should be 1:9.25.

How heavy of a bullet do you want to shoot?

Personally I don't go above a 168gr for hunting with my Rem Mag.
Unless hunting brown bear, it's just not needed.

And it's a Ruger 77 MKII Stainless with the Zytel synthetic stock aka the boat paddle.

ok thanks what specific 168 bullet do you use ? how do you zero you 7 Mag ?

RL22 or RL23 always work well with the 160 class bullets. 4831, all flavors, anything in that class of powder works well. I feel the 160 accubond fits the 7mm RM about perfectly. I've since switched to the 143 Hammer Hunter. I love the round, good luck!

Might want to look into an Ernie the gunsmith trigger kit also. Both of my 77s have them.

I use both the VLD & Classic Hunter.

The VLD likes to be up close and personal to the lands. I seat them 0.005" off the lands in my 7mm Rem Mag.

The Weatherby Mark V in 7mm WBY Mag has a long freebore and short ejection port.
COAL to the lands is 3.630". But for me to be able to eject a loaded round I have to keep the COAL to 3.360".
So the Classic Hunter works well in this.
I'm trying the Classic Hunter in both rifles this year.

Powder right now is RL26.
But as I'm down to my last pound & a half, I'm looking at load development with Ramshot LRT.

The heaviest bullet your gun is likely to shoot is about 180 grain. And I doubt it will shoot it very accurately. I've had several different 7 MM Rem Mags, including an 80's Ruger M77. I never had any luck getting the heavier bullets to shoot at the level of accuracy I wanted out of them, though that means nothing if shooting big game within 300 yards or so. Instead of going with the heaviest bullet, maybe consider something like a 150 grain Barnes TTSX which gives the performance of a heavier bullet - and is usually far more accurate once the right powder combo if found for your rifle. My two current 7 Mags are a Browning semi-auto and a Bat custom rifle. Both rifles actually prefer the same powder (Reloader 22) when shooting the TTSX's in 120, 140 and 150 grain bullets. I use the 120's now on deer and pigs. It is more than enough and very light recoil. That said, all the 7 Mags I have loaded for seem to be the easiest to quickly find an accurate load when using bullets in the 150 grain range. For plinking and practice, I mostly use cheaper 150 grain lead core bullets.

7828 in 7mag was my go to powder also. 160 SpeerBTSP. Long deer kill just shy of 800 yards. 1 shot, bullet on offside hide at 130+ gr. Have fun. 21in 8 point, it was a good day!
