Ruger 1V

Do we have any rifle cranks that have had a 1V re-barreled. I have tired 6MM that needs a new barrel. Wondering if it is worth the time and trouble to go that far.

Mech: We had a 2 page discussion going here, last August, related to your very question. Go to the Main message board, page 8, scroll down about half way to " Ruger No. 1- accuracy?" Original posting by "posit", dated 8-30-08. May answer a lot of your questions. The only thing I would have to add, since then is: Rifle shot O.K., probably better than average, but I was always bothered by the mysterious flyer, always about 2" high and 1" right of the other shots. 'Smith who re-barreled it believes in a heavy pressure pad at the end of the forend. I went to work with a wood dowell and 80 grit paper, and opened up the barrel channel to the receiver. Am able to pass 4 one dollar bills down entire length. Since then, 5 shot groups are consistantly under moa, at 200 yd., and I never have the high flyers anymore. For my #1, floating the barrel improved accuracy. One of my favorites, now.:)

fdshuster,

Thanks for the heads up on the other pages. I was afraid of just the very items mentioned. It is now on to plan "B", the 700 VS .223 and open up the bolt, install the 1-8 twist 6 mm barrel.

Once again thanks,

Mech

You'll be a lot happier with the 700 action than fooling with the #1...
Don't get me wrong, I love my #1's but all my 700's and customs shoot LOTS better groups without near the messing around......
