Chad, don't own the Ruger American, but in the four 17HMR's I own (Anschutz/CZ/Ruger 77-17/Ruger 77-22Mag w/Lilja HMR bbl), all four shoot best with Hornady Varmint Express 17gr V-Max. I've tried almost everything available since the round came out, and this stuff is the most accurate and consistent in all the rifles I've tried it in, same goes for all my rat shooting buddies that use the HMR.

I don't have an American but do have the gray laminate target version in .17 HMR. Mine always liked Federal 17 grain ammo the best, but now I can't find them. Next best is the Hornady and CCI. Winchester ammo turns it into a shotgun - huge groups.
