Ruger 10/22 PRS Build

The time has come for me to up my game plan,,, I've been using a factory Ruger 10/22 but it's limited in what it can really do...

I see that Ruger is making a factory PRS unit,,, but they are costly up here above the 49th,,, I'm pretty sure I can build one for 2/3's the costs...

I'm pretty found of wood stocks,,, has anyone on this forum built one,,, if so,,, what should I be looking for and areas to pay attention to for the best bang per buck...

I'd like to keep it in the $600 to $700 Cad fund range for the rifle only,,, $450/ $500 Usd...

I have a few $1000 optics on hand I can use for this build...

Mid price category with out breaking the bank,,, I might take on a few local small bore PRS matches up here,,, but the majority of uses for this rifle is for general plinking,,, Gophers,,, Badgers at the ranch and the odd Coyote if they come in close to the ground blind...

I've bagged 7 Coyotes and 27 winter Badgers last year with the one I have,,, but I'm sure I can add double that if it would shoot more consistently...

Hopefully I can keep it in the 6 to 7 lb range...

Ideas would sure help to game plan this building...

Thanks from Don

I got a chance this weekend to try and CZ heavy barrel 22 rimfire,,, oh my oh my what a dream to shoot.

It stayed well planted, 6-24x50 optic and a Feather weigth trigger,,, 6 3/4 lbs...

I hope to test a few more quality 22's before I start my build,,, my long time friend is bringing his target Anschutz 22 for me to try,,, I had one years ago,,, super accurate...

Any-who,,, I'm still on track for the semi auto idea,,, not saying that a Left Hand bolt action wouldn't fit the mold,,, more search and destroy I guess... Ha

Since you're using your 10/22 alot for hunting or pest control instead of more of a competition gun I have always felt that it's kinda like the difference between a fast street car and an all out race car.... You can't really have both , it's one or the other....
Maybe something like a nice barrel and maybe a Boyd's stock... The aftermarket for the 10/22 is almost endless these days and really your only limits are your wallet... Maybe even the purchase of a nice new Rifle and adding one of your high quality optics for a competition rifle and keeping the 10/22 for the other... Either way my advice is to do alot of thinking and research before going for it , that way you get your best bang for the buck.... As you probably already know the precision game is very costly and there never seems to be an end....

IMHO, with the budget that you specified you will have difficulty meeting your objective. A top quality barrel will run you anywhere from $200-$400+ (USD). A top quality trigger group will run $200-300+ USD. You still need a stock and either a new bolt or your factory bolt reworked. Here are a couple of examples:

Lilja 10/22 drop-in barrel: $420
Kidd Heavy Barrel (not fluted or threaded): $200
Kidd single stage trigger: $200
Kidd two-stage trigger: $289.95

There are many varieties of parts to choose from, but these are arguably among the 'best' and most popular. Depending on what stock you choose, I would probably double your budget if I wanted to do it right. A budget build can, of course, be done and end up surprisingly accurate.

Yes, I'm starting to lean towards the left hand bolt action idea,,, probilibly the best bang per buck...

At least I'll be able to Jack the bullets into place with a lefty bolt,,, Savage has some half decent rifles in that category in L.

I looked at the Anschutz line up since I've owned one that shot tacks,,, but I'm not about to drop $3200 on one if I can help it...

Beautiful rifles they are...

I'll try my best to stick to my budget if I can,,, even if I get a 18" to 20" Sporter barrel I'm sure I can swing it pretty fast to stay on target,,, I've had good success with other bolts over the years,,, I just thought the semi auto would help me stay on track easier with both of my hands planted on the stock...

Thanks for the ideas, it will help me plan forward...

I'll up date the thread once I find a bolt rifle I can improve the trigger on,,, that's one of the areas I like...

Once I used a match grade Jewel trigger there ain't no going back...

Thx again

Don

If you are going with a 10-22. I would go with the best. I got a Kidd Supergrade barreled action with a Kidd 2 stage trigger, and put it in a Titan stock with a Titan rear anchor. everything runs around $1200. IMO the best setup for a 10-22.
For a bolt gun look at the Tikka T1x or a CZ 455 or 457.
