Ruger #1 Varmint 25/06

I am getting ready to start reloading for a Ruger #1 Varmint and was curious if anyone out there has any Petloads for this rifle cartridge combination. I am wanting to shoot 100- 115 grain bullets, preferably NBT or Barnes. Deer and coyote will be the primary targets.

I look forward to your input!

Had a #1 Varminter in .25-06, quite a rifle! I only used it for targets & varmints, never got around to using it on deer. Very accurate...

Still hunt with a Remington 700 in .25-06 and happily use a couple of different loads which work real well:

100 gr Barnes TSX, H4350, Win cases, Fed 210m primers @ 3340 fps - accurate and penetrates like a carbide drill bit! The bullet does expand, but penetration is incredible. I suspect this bullet would bore right through an elk or a bear as well. Instantly lethal on two mule deer bucks for me.

115 gr Berger VLD, Retumbo, Win cases, Fed 210m primers @ 3200 fps - accurate, easily penetrates into the chest cavity but may not exit. Incredible destruction inside the chest cavity. Have used this bullet on three mule deer from 175 - 400 yards. All three were instant drops.

Regards, Guy

Coyotes & deer with the .25-06 you said?

115 gr Berger at about 165 yards as I recall:

115 gr Berger from about 230 yards:

100 gr Barnes from about 125 yards:

I think the .25-06 makes a dandy coyote & mule deer rifle, and blows up rockchucks very well too.

Thanks for the good info. This is my 4th 25/06, I just have not started load development for it yet. I will have to check into those Bergers, I have been hearing good things about them.

I currently have Barnes 100 gr, which I am looking forward to trying after hunting with them in my 243 (85 grainers). I was very impressed with their performance. I also have NBT 115 grains which has been my standby for my other 25/06's except for a Ruger Varmint M77 MK II, which would not stabilize over 100 gr.

I dug through my powder assortment and found a couple of pounds of IMR 4350, a pound of H4831sc and a partial pound of IMR 4831, as well I have a large supply of Varget. That should give me a good start of powder and bullets to work with.

I did see today that the local gun shop that they had received a large supply of Berger. I will have to see what they have.

M700- How far off the Lands are you seating the Barnes? My 243 likes about .065 of jump. Most of the .257 I hear about like the seating about .050-.055.

Guy- Thanks for the photos nice rifle and looks as tho it has proven itself. You Gotta love the 25/06!

Thanks Again!
