Ruger #1 questions....

Looking to build 30-378 Weatherby on a #1 Ruger. Does anyone have pictures of the Extractor cut? Does this leave a portion of unsupported case? And if so, Is this a problem shooting full bore loads? Thanks in advance...

Here is a pic of one I just did. Use the extractor as a template. It also helps to have a Ruger barrel stub to use as a prototype.

Ken,

I have a Ruger No1 that I bought several years ago in .25-06 that has never been fired and will likely rebarrel before I do. I have never done a Ruger No 1, is there anything unique about removing the barrel? I guess since there is an extractor cut, it has to be timed like a Mod 70 huh?

The problem rebarelling the #1's is the forend hanger. You need to have a bushing that fits the barrel in front of it and you need an action wrench specifically for that action. (I use a 15" crescent wrench well padded). The barrel needs to be threaded and chambered and then installed to mark the extractor location. Install the extractor in the action, using the through bolt to locate it and then mark it using it as a guide. Not a super sensitive job, just takes a bit of time.
