ROTATOR CUFF AGAIN

Before you go the replacement route, get another opinion. It may be the same answer but a replacement can fail also. A good friend had a replacement after 2 surgeries failed on her shoulder. The replacement failed and she can't raise her hand above her shoulder.

I've heard failure and success stories from these surgeries. Many times it's the patient that doesn't listen to the Dr while other cases were just a hack job on the Drs part. I wrecked my shoulder in a motorcycle accident at 40 years old. Dr told me I needed surgery due to rotator cuff damage and tendon and muscle tears. Broke bones during the accident as well but they healed ok. I decided on NOT getting the surgeries. I started PT on my own and shoulder workouts followed. I returned to a better stronger place than before the accident. The Dr said now or later but I'll still need surgery. It's been well over 20 years and while my shoulder and arm fall asleep at night and occasionally i get some minor aches, I'm still surgery free from it. I work out regularly with free weights and I think that's helped tremendously but recently I had to stop exercising due to some cancer surgery and treatment and I can feel the pain beginning to return. It's been 6 months since a workout and I'm almost fully recovered from this recent issue so looking forward to getting back into my workouts regiments. If it's possible, grab some dumbbells and start working on the area that's causing you pain. Light weights and different movements as recommended by a PT would be best. I always think surgery is absolutely the last option. If it starts to return and workouts don't help, I'll see a Dr about surgery

SLAP tear for 20 years, surgery isn't guaranteed so I have just lived with it. Feel your pain quite litterealy. 55 and still working.

Had both shoulders replaced in 2023, bone on bone arthritis
Was told at my age (68) the default is to use a reverse implant but because I was active, fit and rotator cuffs
were intact they went with anatomical implants.
Basically no pain involved but was amazed how debilitating it was and how long the rehab took
Glad I had it done even thou after two years I am still working on building strength in my right shoulder
left side great

Before surgery get all the opinions you can. Huge steps forward in replacement surgery. Get to a hospital that specializes in replacements. The Ortha pod who did my hips no longer does them, says there are much better procedures now. DIL was touching her toes in less than a month after hip replacement. Walked out of the hospital in one day with just a cane! But she is in excellent shape and no extra weight! That helps.

Get the surgery and do REALIZE it will be at least a year for full recovery. Be patient and try your best to not over use it or you will be back at the starting point again. The hardest thing to do is realizing and thinking, I can do this and it won't hurt. Good luck and praying for you.

The risk of a rotator cuff retear after surgery is high, ranging from 13–94%. The rate of re-tear depends on several factors, including:

  • Tear size: Large tears (3 cm by 5 cm) have a re-tear rate of about 27%, while massive tears have a rate of 50–90%.

  • Age: Older patients have an increased risk of re-tear.

  • Muscle quality: Poor muscle quality increases the likelihood of re-tear.

  • Gender: Female patients have an increased risk of re-tear.

  • Fatty degeneration: The degree of fatty degeneration in the rotator cuff increases the risk of re-tear.

  • Repair technique: The technique used to repair the rotator cuff can affect the risk of re-tear.

  • Rehabilitation: The rehabilitation regimen can affect the risk of re-tear.
Despite the high rate of re-tear, patients who experience a re-tear often still have a significant recovery and the re-tear is usually smaller than the original tear

Man I I had a slap tear that originally thought to be a rotator cuff so I know some of your pain and I wish you a fast recovery.
My father in law is your age and week before thanksgiving he fell off a ladder landed on his shoulder breaking it that requires plate and pins. He’s a stubborn mule and was trying to get on a ladder this week again
I have a bull headed friend, that is 82, and absolutely refuses to retire. Three surgeries last year and just called last night to tell me he needs a biscuit repaired in his left knee. Right one last year.

Well here we go again. I'm 4 months out from surgery and just found out my surgery was a complete failure, everything that was repaired has come apart. I followed the dr. and therapist instructions to a T, that did no good, the tears are worse now than before (completely torn now).
See the dr. on the 15th to hopefully find a solution. I think i am going to ask for a replacement, less pain involved and heals faster.
I haven't had a night sleep since the beginning of June and it is starting to take its toll.
Almost 73, Who says these are the "GOLDEN YEARS". Oh well it could be worse, I guess.
Find a new Doctor. One that specializes in "redos" ... they are out there.

I feel your pain, well pretty close to your pain. Four years ago I had L4-L5 spinal fusion and it seemed to be a success. At almost exactly a year after surgery I was out quail hunting and all of a sudden my back started to ache, by the time I drove home about 20 miles I was in terrible pain. Had to go to the emergency room 75 miles away to get treatment where I just got xray and painkillers, the xray showed the surgery to be intact. Took me two weeks to see the surgeon and he put me on steroids. It healed again but slowly over the next 3 yrs the pain came back and I was diagnosed that the L3-L4 disc had herniated into my spinal cord. Went to a neurologist this time around but the diagnosis was the same, surgery needed to fix it and soon. Just had the L3-L4 surgery last Friday. The surgeon ended up taking out the hardware from the first fusion so he could make the 2nd fusion work better so that meant more trauma to my spine. At home now recuperating and so far it feels good except for the surgery site healing. Severe leg and hip pain are gone. Drop foot is better. Fukin painful and it suks to get old!

Drop foot is better.
That scares me.

Has injections today on each side of my spine. They are talking about deading the nerve. Not too sure about that.

Yes, getting old sucks.

Getting run over by a Buff didn't do me any favors with my back either .... (I'm alive .... he isn't, so in the long run, I won).

I think have a small tear. I’m young but every one in a while it bothers me and starts popping. If I bring my elbow up in the outward direction, I’ve learned to the point it forward while still up then roll it down to my hip to stop the catching and popping. Had a cortisone shot couple years ago, seemed to help a bit. I almost don’t want to go to doctor to hear bad news.

I've had both of mine done. MUCH better getting it repaired if you are young

Yep, I had a mountain bike crash 2 years ago. It took 6 months to get back most of my movement. I had a tear on my right shoulder. Then 6-7 months after my bike crash, I fell again on my right shoulder and rip 2 of them off completely. Got surgery in July last year for the repair. I would never wish that on anyone, the sling time was awful for me. So if your shoulder is working without pain and you have pretty good movement. I would not do anything.

Currently, this round there is a soreness when touch and pressed on. The catching and popping aren’t to say painful, they feel unnatural but I also stop movement when they happen. Before I had my shot the first time having issues, I nearly couldn’t put a tshirt on because of how difficult it was to try to get arm through sleeve.

In saying this, Froggy, I hope everything works out for you.

Sorry to hear of your problems. go for the complete replacement. Had my left one done 6 years ago and it's going good no problems

Bone on bone several years.....junk. Full replacement 8 days ago. Going well, but didn't hear anything about 25# limit on lifting until too late.

AZmark I'm fused from L3 down to my tail bone, 8 surgeries.
Went to dr this afternoon, shoulder is being scheduled for replacement. Looking at the MRI and it shows complete tear of rotator and tears in the bicep.
Another 4-6 months of recovery. No shooting until at least May.
