Ross's muzzle breaks

Does anyone have experiance with the Ross's Muzzle break? Opinions appreciated. Looks like a great design, vented to the side and top holes. I do not like breaks but the 33-378 is in need. I dont like the big JP breaks or square breaks that snag on everything while trecking through the bush.

I used to own a 30-378 Weatherby and shot 150gr Lazzeroni bullets. It had a Speedy Gonzales brake on it and the thing still beat the crap out of me. If I had a 33-378 I think after what I have read, I would have to go with the JP brake. Also, ig not already installed, buy a GRACO Mercury recoil reducer and put it in the butt. These things really help.

I have brakes on all my rifles except the .22 rimfires. I have tried different types. Between the two mentiioned here I think the JP is going to be the better of the two.

I had Ross put one on my 300RUM and love it. Easy to clean, effective, and I can shoot all day long now. Ross is a great guy give him a call and he will provide recommendations.

I have a dilemma of sorts: How do you have a timed brake installed on a Savage barrel that isn't mounted? My guess is that you set the head-space and mark the barrel with a "UP" line and then remove it from the action and ship it off for the brake install. Is that right?

Thanks,

John

That would be one way... another is to use peel washers (available in packages containing various thicknesses) or a crush washer to time the brake yourself. Also, if its just a very small amount off you could put some wet/dry sand paper on a flat surface (granite surface plates are fairly cheap, and have other uses later) and carefully sand off a few thousandths at a time until the brake fits and the timing is correct. Short of having it actually machined to fit, none of the above will give you a flush (around the outside diameter) fit if that matters to you...

I really think the JP brake is not as effective as some would state, I think I read somewhere it reduced recoil 95%, that's a good one.

This is a link to some videos of my brakes on different cartridges, the 338 wsm hangun had the JP brake and it was replaced with the Muscle brake, the owner stated that the recoil reduction was better with the Muscle brake, see video.

As far as Ross brakes they are very good recoil reducers, they work on a similar design and they too share the good looks the JP doesn't.
