Rossi 92 ?

I am taking a job in Alaska this summer, I intend to do some camping while I am there. I really don't want to be unarmed out in the bush. But, I can't fly through Canukistan with a gun without lots of B.S. so I am thinking I'll just buy one when I get there. I was thinking about a lever gun in 454, or at least 44 for personal protection while I am there. Then ship it home in the fall.
I have an original 92 in 38-40 and its a nice little gun, is the Rossi version a POS or is it pretty good?

A Rossi 92 is not a pos.
They can be a little rough out of the box but can be slicked up pretty easily with some polishing and changing some springs.
I have one in 45 colt and would not part with it! It will take some pretty heavy 300 grain cast bullet loads.
There are some gunsmiths who specialize in doing the polishing and improving the triggers etc.

Call the Sportsman Warehouse store in Anchorage and ask them what they have and what they would suggest for what you want to carry as a firearm for protection out camping and all in Alaska.

I have a 50+ yo Rossi 92 .357. It’s been tuned up and is my favorite lever rifle.
Great guns.

Rossi 92s are overbore in the .44 mags if you decide to go that route. This is only an issue if you shoot cast bullets. .432 cast is what you need usually for it to all come together.

Have had several, 357, they are a ‘92 pattern, not copy. They do a lot of things good and some not so good. Build quality 8.5/10, accuracy depending on load 9/10, durability 9.5/10. Only 2 problems I have ever had with them (which is why I am not using the ones I have for comp any more) is slow twist barrel (have to shoot heavier bullets hard to get them to stabilize) and sloppy chamber (which effectively “Glock bulges“ your brass if you run hot loads). These 2 problems don’t matter if you aren’t concerned about reloading brass life or want to shoot light loads.

YMMV, IMHO, etc…

I have one in 45 Colt as well, was already slicked up with all the Steve's Gunz tweaks by previous owner. Very smooth.

I get a slight "Glock bulge" with 292gr powder coated cast at ~1300fps, Starline brass.

I have three, one each .357 mag, .44 mag, and .45 Colt. All have been slicked up by me using using Steve's Gunz products. All are nice and smooth, easily well worth the price. The older ones where not as good, but in the last 3 or 4 years quality has gotten much better.

Glock 10mm? S&W in 44 mag? Holstered pistols leave your hands free for the 99% of the time you don’t need a gun out. Let’s say you’re out gathering firewood around camp, a bear shows up and your lever gun is leaning against your tent? Can you fish while holding a lever gun?
You could buy one here and ship it up before you go. It would also give you time to load and test some real 10mm ammo for it. I bought a Glock, put a 22 pound spring in it and loaded some stout rounds. Thank you Alaskan bush man for the advice! I have to hold it tight ‘cause they’re moving fast.

For you Rossi POS happy owners, I have a 10ish year old 357 works great once you get past loading the tube GAINT POS tube, I did the FIXES suggested did not help, have had my thumb caught by the loading gate to many times. Thinking of leaving it out in the rain to pay it back, Guess I will look up Steve's Gunz

I don't trust the shippers to get a gun there. I am going through Canada because it takes perfect weather conditions to fly the coast route and its pretty tight on fuel to go non-stop Washington to Alaska. I've got a few handguns I'd take, but I am not willing to have them get lost in transit. If I try to take a long gun with me, it will add significant hassle at the border crossings. Most of the time you call them, they give you a number for entry and don't even come out. I'd prefer not to deal with the hassle.
I can buy a long gun there, 44 is pretty common ammo, I'm going to shoot a little just for fun. A 44 out of a longer barrel has pretty good punch, and is far easier to hit with than a handgun.

I am the curator of the Land of POS toys. Please forward your FFL and adoption price. Considering, of course, the resounding description offered as is...
