Robert “Bob” Pitcairn has left range…
Bob died this morning after a very brief struggle with undiagnosed bone cancer. He was a good man, a great competitor, and a friend to all. Bob was a member of numerous Canadian rifle teams, and was the best representative of his team and country that I can imagine. He was an absolute joy to be around, and will be missed come Spring at the Palma Championship.

I was one of the Lucky . I was a Friend and Student of Bob's Shooting and Wind Reading Instructions .

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to shoot in matches with Bob. I was a newbie and Bob was always open for discussion and a true pleasure to be in the company of. He made an impression on me that I will always be grateful of.

Rest in peace.

Bob was a regular in the Canadian Palma rifle contingent that came down to SACV for the annual March Madness Palma Matches that I attended in the early 2000'nds. I finally took him up on his invitation to come up to shoot at his home range at Chilliwack, to his delight. The second day of the visit, he excitedly asked me what I thought of the range! I told him that I had a "range protest" to bring to his attention, which seemed to concern him. "Yes", I said, "Bob, the grandeur of the Northern Rocky Mountain panorama behind the target line is just too distracting!" Which brought out one of his best smiles and chuckles. He will be missed.

Capt. Robert Andrew Pitcairn

I did not know Robert Pitcairn, nor did I ever meet him. Nonetheless, he had a very great impact on my life as an F-TR shooter. Years ago, I decided to have a .223 Rem purpose built as an F-TR rifle and set up to shoot 90 gr "heavy" bullets. Everything was new to me, the caliber, the rifle setup, and most especially, how to make it work. Robert's article, "A Mouse on Steroids" detailing his work with the .223 Rem and 90 gr bullets was a fundamental resource for that endeavor, and it should still be considered the "go to" guide for anyone wishing to use a .223 Rem in F-TR. Although I never met Robert, one can sometimes learn a lot about someone from their writings. Robert's meticulous attention to detail and his love of the shooting sports clearly showed in that article, so in a way, I did get to know something of him by reading it.

I've won a lot of F-TR matches shooting that .223 Rem with 90s. Thanks Robert!

This ^^^

I had been shooting my .223 with 90 grain bullets very successfully after I stumbled upon the same article. I think I still have a copy. It literally was my first true encounter with extreme accuracy. Few years ago when I met Bob, I told him that he's been schooling me without ever meeting. We had a good chuckle about it.
