RL22 vs RL23

i’m currently using RL22 but thinking of switching to RL23 for better temperature sensitivity. I’ve been told the burn rates are about the same. Can anyone confirm? Also any downside to switching from 22 to 23?
Thx

I've compared the two in 7wsm, 6ai, 300wm, 270wsm.

In my experience RL22 is slower burning than 23. Also I've found RL25 is slower burning than RL26. Despite what the name implies.

Depends upon the intended cartridge.
Like RL16, RL23 can be bulky in smaller cartridges.
In cartridge like the 7mm Rem Mag, RL23 does well.
284 Win it's a little too bulky for my liking.

I've never used 23 or 26 but have read lots of positive reviews of both. I have however used both 22 and 25 for years with excellent results in my 25.06. I have honestly never experienced the temp sensitive claims with either here in NC but we also don't have radical temp changes here either. Both 22 and 25 have been very consistent for me in both accuracy and velocity so I think I'll just stick with those. Besides, I have such a good stock built up now of both I'd be crazy to switch to something else.

RL23 is slightly faster than H4831SC which is also slight faster than RL22 that being said RL23 gives much better consistency and groups than 4831SC in my 300 WSM.
I say give RL 23 a try, I think you'll like it.

RL23 works great in 280AI with 140 to 162 class bullets. I found it to be a tad slower than 22 and fps was better than 22.

I have been using RL22 in my 30-06AI, I thought about changing to RL23 but I don't want a faster powder.
Thanks for the info

RL 23 has been my "go to" powder in my Shehane with 180 class bullets, as well as my 6SLR w/110 SMK's. I tried to make it work in my 6.5x55 GWI but it likes RL-16 much more.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

My limited experience with 22/23, was with my 7 mags. I noticed relatively small differences in these powders, when used with the 139 Interlocks. Both are great powder, but the 23 may be a bit more stable.

As an added note. RL-22 while giving great speed and accuracy wouldn't go 3-20 shot matches w/sighters without fouling the bbl. to the point that the accuracy went south,,,,a LOT! That, for me is the litmus test. RL-22 would be a great powder for a hunting rifle assuming the rifle likes it, but has no place in my match rifles.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Been using reloader 23 in my 6.5 x 284 norma for several years when I first started there was no data for 23 I was told to use 22 data everything worked out as it should

For my 300 wsm i went from 22 to 23. Does seem to be less temp sensitive. My first accuracy node with 22 was about 2780’s fps with 210 vld. 64.7 gr was high end of the window. 64.4-64.7 all shot good. Same seat depth, 23 hit First node around 2754 with 64 grains. Hunting mag length limited seat depth

playing around more i single fed and loaded closer to lands. Hit a 2830’s fps node at 65.3 grains rl23. Thats my go to load now.

Started using R-23 in my 30/06 hunting rifle with 165-180gr bullets. Gave excellent results for accuracy and velocity.
