RL15.5 in 220 swift?

i know it may be far fetched but RL15 and 16 are used in the swift but I haven’t seen any data for 15.5. I know there is not much out there at all but wondering if anyone has used this powder in the swift. I have some 55gr various manufacturers I’d like to try with it. Seems like it would be a good powder for the round.

It is halfway in between.

Yeah I was seeing if anyone had any data as far as velocity/accuracy with it. I know I’ve read people have done well heavies in 223, was thinking it may do well in the swift. I dont have a chrono so I we’ll see if there’s any info out there

RL-15.5 is good for heavies in .223, but it's probably too fast for even light bullets in .220 Swift; RL-17 would be a better candidate with light bullets and RL-19 with heavies.

I don't believe we tested TS 15.5 in the 220 Swift Majday, as it is on the fast side for good performance.
If you have data for Reloder 15, then you could use that as a starting point for TS 15.5, working up from below obviously.
For those looking for the new TS 15.5, we started shipping our new lot into distribution this week, so it should begin popping up soon. We are packing and shipping both 1lb and 8lb sizes with this lot, so hopefully more folks get some with this larger lot.
Shoot well,
Paul

Thanks Paul, it is helpful to know to start watching again.

I'm unsure where you get the idea that 15.5 will be too fast for the Swift. Hell... IMR3031 was the powder in the original factory loads & was also a good performer in my Swifts. RL15 barely edged out H4895, with a bit more velocity & equal or better accuracy, in my hunting Swift with 50, 52, & 53gr bullets. Not quite 4000fps, but backed it down to mid 3900s for best accuracy. RL15.5 may be even better. There was no such thing as RL17 when I had Swifts, so I cant comment.

Hoping to find some 15.5 this time around to try in 22-250 Ackley with 50-53s. Cant depend on any of the 4350s to be available, or remotely the same burn rate as the last jug.

Thanks for the info. I may have to test it out and see how accuracy is. That’s good to hear, hopefully more people will be able to get some of this lot coming soon.

I started my workup using RL15 data in my Swift. My best accuracy .360" @ 100 yards was found at 39.2 grains with 50 Sierra BK, Winchester Brass, GM210M primer, Should be around 3950 fps. 38.4 grains average vel = 3857 fps, 38.8 grains average vel = 3906 fps, ES 7, SD 4.7 (5 shots). Labradar doesn't go too much above 3900 fps.
53 grain Sierra MK .345" group @ 100 with 39 grains RL 15.5 for average vel = 3884 fps, ES 9, SD 4.5 fps.

Anyone know the QL Heat of Explosion data for RL 15.5?

It burns about 300 deg cooler than H4895 3800 I'm thinking off the top of my head.

I ended up settling on 38.5 gr at about 3780 fps. Shot up to 40 but got swipes just under 3900. Shot using 55 ballistic tip. Around 1/2" with the 38.5. Took a yote few weeks back at little over 500 with the load. Win brass, GM210M
Pretty happy with results of 15.5. Ended up finding a good buy on 2 8lbers so I'm set for quite a while.

Based on your reloading experience and charges it looks like RL15 and RL15.5 are very close to IMR4064. The classic powder way back when for the Swift. Good shooting.
