RL 26 and the 284 Win........

I've been shooting the 284 for about 4 yrs now. After extensive testing, I've settled on H4831SC as my powder of choice. My setup I've been using is a 1.25 straight 1:9 Twist Bartlein 32" finish barrel.
I use 180 Hybrids, CCI BR2 primers, and 54.5gr of 4831sc. With this I've been able to achieve 2830 fps with single number ES and SD. The rifle has been a hammer.

Well all good things must come to an end. Its time to replace the barrel. I've chosen to go with the 8.25 twist barrel this time. I haven't had the chance to test RL26 and would appreciate any input on your experiences, pros, cons, and load data from those that have tested and use or used it in a similar configuration.

Any and all opinions appreciated

Thanks Brad

Thanks.....I'll take all the help I can get...

Brad, I just finished testing the RL 26 with the Berger 180's and 195's in my 7 RSAUM which is similar to the straight 284. I gave my actual chrono data back to Berger a few days ago so its in their data base now. The RL26 shot well and did give me better velocity by about 75-100 FPS, which sounds great. BUT, I couldn't get the ES down. At 200 Yards testing, the groups were as good as I got using 4831SC, with higher velocity. But when I did the math and Ballistic calcs at the high / lo of the ES at the higher velocities I saw, that the overall stats told me not to change the load I had been using with 4831 SC. If I was out of powder, I would try the RL 26 in a match to see if empirically I would find the same thing as I saw doing the math. But aside from that, I'm staying with my previous load.

Great Info.....Thanks.

I purchased a lb. of RL26 yesterday for testing. I won't be able to start load development till after the 1st of June. That's ET for completion from my Smitty. I'll post results and pass them on.

I'm sure more than 2 people on this planet has tested RL26. Feedback is a good thing.......

I use RL-26 in the 284/140gr in a 18"bbl and my top end is 3155fps,
with great accuracy, in my hunting SP pistol, It is my go to load.

Tia,
Don

Using it in a new 32" brux 9 twist with 180vld and 56 grains gets me about 2840. Only have 40 rounds down the barrel but 55.7gr has been shooting good so far on the first firing of necked up lapua.

have any of you tried VV165 in a 284?
I have tried N165 a few times but don't bother with it in this small a case any more. I now stick to H4350 in the 284 and 7SAUM and only switch to N165 in my bigger 7mm/300WSM. The ES was not as good with N165 and it was a little more temp sensitive.

I think that VV165 is about perfect in the 6.5-284, maybe VV170 for the bigger bore of the 284? As far as ES mine got better as pressure got close to max, but that was a 6.5 so maybe I am off base. There is a VV powder that is triple based a 5 series powder that is close to the burn rate of VV165 I wanted to try but never could find any. A friend used it and had great results but I don't remember what cartridge.
