Rings and Base - Need help

Hey all. Recently picked up a Savage LRP in the .243 caliber (seen here).

I'm trying to figure out what my first scope is going to be, and I think I've narrowed it down between a Minox ZV-3 3-9x40 or a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. However, I'm still a bit confused on where the Rings and Base fit into this equation.

What specifically should I be looking for in the Rings and Base?

First off , how far do you plan to shoot this rifle? If at extended ranges you would want to consider a 1 pc. 20 MOA base and decent rings. I like Leupold PRW's and QRW's, others like the Burris rings with the inserts for they leave no ring marks.

Also be aware that with 2 piece bases the span between the rings on a Savage may be a problem with short scopes or ones with long eye relief. The Minox has very long eye relief.

LRP is a target action, closed top. Make sure the base doesn't have a recoil lug as there is no where for the recoil lug to go.


Ken Farrell has bases specifically for that action in steel and aluminum. I am running the steel base and his steel rings, top notch gear. His rings are machined to very close tolerance and don't require lapping.

If you are going with a 40 mm bell, you might get by with low rings. There is a chart on their web site, but I just called them and asked what rings to use with my 56 mm bell. Very helpful folks.

I would always consider 20moa base ( or more). There seems to always be enough "DOWN"..."UP" is the problem. As long as I can get most of the 'down' zeroed at 100 yards for a starting point I have lots of elevation to dial in. There is a better way of saying this so it makes sense.

I wood go with a one piece al or steel 20Moa base. With a med height rings of good quality. High rings would raise t he scope too high to make comfortable.

Well I'm completely new to this scene. My plan is basically to start out around 100 - 300 and just get the hang of things. Learn more about ballistics, bullet composition, etc. Once I start feeling comfortable with what I have and how things work, I'll probably start trying to work up to longer distances.

Can you explain what the difference between a Low, Standard, Medium or High Ring would do? Is it basically just the height it raises the scope off the gun?

The bell diameter of the objective end of the scope will need to be known to determine the height of the ring. Also being a varmint barrel and if you use a 20 moa base will add little factor to ring height.

Those are fine hunting scopes you mentioned. However, wouldn't be the first choice for a hunting/target combo.

That is it. I have my 56 mm bell with just enough clearance off the barrel to get the rubber scope bikini over it.

One thing I should have clarified from the beginning is that I'd like to try and get everything for under $500. I realize that isn't going to give me the greatest setup in the world, but at the same time I don't know what I like or dislike so I can get something cheap, see what I don't like about it, and then when I upgrade at point down the line, I'll get things I like a lot better.

So yeah. If people have recommended brands of a base and rings that would work for my gun that aren't $300+ for both, I'd appreciate that.

Weaver and EGW aluminum 20 moa bases run $35.00- $45.00. Rings another $50.00- $65.00. I have a Weaver T24 1/8 Targetdot sitting here with a set of PRW's on it that I will let go at a good deal. The scope is in excellant shape, only setback it is 1/4 moa adjustment. If interested shoot me a pm.
