I'm curious as to why so many of the vortex scopes that are used have ring marks. Is the tube material too soft? Did they Lapp the rings and check for alignment or perhaps too much torque. With all the experience on this site I can't but think the material is weak. Everyone has high praise for the VGE scopes.

90% of the ring marks I have seen are just aluminum marks from the rings. Unless the coating on the scope is actually scratched you can usually remove the so called marks with a little car wax.
Per Vortex contact, 18 inch pounds is max torque for their scope VGE. Hope this info may help someone. 15 inch pounds is what I use on all my rings .
Two key reasons are failure to lapp rings which puts too much pressure on ring edges and the other cause is over torqueing the set screws. Rather than tightening the set screws as hard as you can you're better off using something like locktight on the screws to ensure as lasting hold.
