Ring marks on scope

Again, really good quality rings don't, or perhaps shouldn't, need to be lapped...

That is the biggest misconception out there. I dont care if rings cost $500. They ALL could use some lapping.

I don't lap rings, but have the tools. Since only the bottom ring can be lapped, leaving the upper as is - where is the advantge?

? ??? ?

When you lap rings they become a matched set for that specific rifle. Not to be used on any other rifle. The upper part of the ring is lapped right along with the bottom part. You do not remove the bottom portion of the ring from the action after lapping. Each upper ring must stay with the lower portion it was lapped with and be installed facing the same direction it was during lapping.

After a good lapping, the advantages are, better ring to scope contact (especially important for large magnum calibers), less stress on scope body that may hinder dependability of scope adjustments, very low chance of scope ring marks if torqued properly, usually eliminates any excessive windage and elevation corrections when zeroing rifle, and a warm and fuzzy feeling inside knowing your expensive optics are being cradled properly :)
