Ring height question?

I am about to order a set of Burris Sig 30mm rings but am not sure on what height? I will be using a Sightron SIII 10x50 and a Musgrave action with a medium Palma barrel but will be putting on a heavy Palma later. I have .510" from the top of the barrel to the top of the rail at the nose of the rail. With my quick math it looks like I need the extra tall but Im not sure if Im doing it right.

Thanks

This is a hard question to answer, there are so many unknown unfamiliar variables. What I ended up doing to find my ring height was to ball up a couple of pieces of modeling clay and sit them on the mounts and then I carefully placed the scope onto the clay and pressed down until I got the clearance that I wanted. I then measured and bought rings accordingly. It's not fancy but it seems to work... at least it did for me.

I use post-it note pads. You can peel them apart in any size layer, add and subtract in a couple thou increments, and can be measured easily with a caliper. Cut the pad down to fit under your scope without interfering with anything.

You can use this method to determine clearance for your future barrel contour as well. Simply place the scope close to where you want it mounted. Now you can measure how far the scope sticks out over the barrel. Find out the diameter of the new contour at the same length, and that will tell you if it will clear.

I usually gauge the height by trying to position the scope level with the objective (big end) against the barrel, and placing different sized drill bits in between the tube and mount. If I can get a 7/16" bit in there, I know I need a mount with at least .4375 height to clear the barrel.
