Ring height needed for 56MM objective?

I have a new rifle coming with a varmint profile barrel and a new scope, a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25X56 and I plan on getting some 34mm Burris Xtreme tactical signature rings and I'm not sure if I'll need the low or mediums for use with your standard picatinny rail. I just want to be able to clear the barrel by a little bit. Anyone have the same/similar set up that can give me an idea? Thanks.

What rifle? Makes a difference. Also generic terms like low and medium change from maker to maker. Best to speak in heights from base to center of tube as most do but even there some makers are screwy and go from base to bottom of tube.

That said 1" height from base to center of tube works with most standard bolt guns with 20 MOA bases on them. Here is a pic of the scope on my Vudoo with 1.1" height rings on a 40 MOA base. That barrel is similar to a varmint contour.

Not to hijack your thread but I need to know the same thing. Gunwerks action with the 2 piece 20 Moa bases that they send in their actions. Bartlien 3b barrel with the 56mm strike eagle. Want to be as close to the barrel as I can be but don’t want to order 3 different sets of rings till i find the ones that work.

From your post, I infer that you are trying, for whatever reason, to mount the scope as low as possible over the bore.

While I realize a lot of people are navigating under the misapprehension as low to the bore as possible is the only way to mount a scope, let me state that I disagree. To me, what is most important about mounting a scope on a rifle is shooter comfort, which leads to repeatability, as most critical factor in marksmanship.

On my match rifles, the scopes are mounted quite high, some as high as 2.5 inches above the bore. This height suits me and I can hold my head upright behind the rifle which is quite comfortable. This way I can stay behind the scope for a long time without tiring or stressing and it's easy to get in the same position again and again.

I have Burris Extra High XTR rings on my F-TR match rifle, and they are mounted on a canted rail on top of the receiver.

Just something to consider if the rifle will be used from prone or off a bench for longer sessions.

That is correct. You don’t have to have it as low as possible. The 1” sets the scope at a comfortable height for prone or bench shooting. You could go 1.1” but I wouldn’t go any higher.

For ballistics purposes, after you install the scope at whatever height you end up with, you need to measure the distance between the middle of the scope (horizontal axis) and the middle of the bore of the barrel. That distance is what you need to enter in ballistics programs such as JBM. That's the important distance and that's the one to which I was referring above. Since the ring height is usually measured from the middle of the ring (or top of the bottom half) to the bottom of the column sitting on top of the base, you just need to measure the distance from the middle of the bore to the top of the base and then add the ring height.

I second std7mag's input regarding your fit to the gun. For the most part, a 56mm objective will raise the scope's eyepiece to a height that should work not only for clearance on the barrel but provide a good cheek weld. I've seen many shooters try to fit the scope as close to the barrel as possible but end up losing proper cheek weld and natural POA. If a scope has to go higher, then an adjustable cheek piece would be great and yes its better to have a scope close to the bore axis but be careful sacrificing natural POA.

When I have a question about ring height I call Euro Optic. They will take the time to answer your question and make you feel like an old friend. These are good people.

I used 34mm XTR Signature* medium rings for a 60mm objective scope on a rail mounted on a 6BR.
The height provided .25in clearance and perfect eye alignment for me.

The medium XTR Signature Rings part #420210 is the lowest 34mm height at 1.00 in

*Note the XTR II rings come in Signature (with inserts) or Tactical (no inserts)

My rail is a Nightforce and is slightly taller than an EGW Rail.

While rail height and barrel taper are factors, the medium height XTR Signature rings should work for you.
